Description of the drug: Mefenamic acid (Acidum mephenamicum)

MEPHENAMINIC ACID (Acidum mephenamicum).

N- (2, 3-Dimethylphenyl) anthranilic acid.

Synonyms: Acidum mefenamicum, Coslan, Lysalgo, Mefenamic acid, Parkemed, Ponstan, Ponstel, Ponstyl, Pontal, Tanston and others.

Crystalline powder is grayish white in color. Almost nerastvorim in water, little soluble in alcohol.

Mephenamic acid is an anthranilic acid derivative having structural similarities to salicylic acid and its derivatives used as anti-inflammatory agents. It has analgeziruyuschey, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activity, and as an anti-inflammatory drug surpasses the activity of salicylates. According to the analgesic activity, mefenamic acid is equivalent to butadione and is superior to salicylates, and by antipyretic activity is equal to these drugs.

According to the mechanism of action, mefenamic acid is close to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory substances. By the ability to inhibit the biosynthesis of prostaglandins occupies an intermediate position between butadion and indomethacin.

Apply mefenamic acid for rheumatism, nonspecific infectious polyarthritis, arthralgia and muscle pains, neuralgia, with headache and toothache, etc. And as an antipyretic for various fever states.

Assign inside (after eating) to adults for 0.5 g 3 - 4 times a day. If necessary and good tolerability, increase the daily dose to a maximum of 3 g, and after achieving the therapeutic effect, the dose is reduced to 1 g per day. Children aged 5 to 10 years are prescribed 0.25 g 3 - 4 times a day, over 10 years - 0.3 g 3 - 4 times a day.

The duration of treatment depends on the features of the case and the tolerability of the drug; Usually the course of treatment lasts 20 - 45 days (if necessary, up to 2 months).

The drug is usually well tolerated (sometimes it is prescribed with poor tolerance of salicylates), but it can cause nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea. To prevent these phenomena, the drug is taken after a meal. It is recommended to take the tablets with milk. In some cases, allergic events are possible (skin itch, rash).

Mefenamic acid is contraindicated in peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum and inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Care must be taken when prescribing the drug to patients with diseases of the hematopoietic organs and kidneys.
