It has a complex effect on the central nervous system; in small doses causes a weakening of inhibitory processes, in large doses - a decrease in the processes of excitation; toxic doses strongly inhibit the excitability of nerve cells.

The drug is rapidly absorbed. Sleep occurs in 15 to 20 minutes, lasts 6 to 8 hours; often accompanied by a decrease in blood pressure; vomiting is possible.
More often, chloral hydrate is used for mental agitation and as an anticonvulsant for spasmophilia, tetanus, etc.
