Description of the medicine: Theobromine (Theobrominum)

Theobrominum. 3, 7-Dimethylxanthine. Alkaloid extracted from the husks of cocoa seeds (Semina Sasao). It is also obtained synthetically.

Synonyms: Theostene, Thesal.

White crystalline powder of bitter taste. Very little soluble in cold water (1: 700), a little - in hot, easily - in dilute alkalis and acids.

By its chemical structure and pharmacological properties it is close to other alkaloids of the purine series. Has a stimulating effect on cardiac activity, slightly dilates the coronary vessels of the heart and bronchi, enhances the urination. Diuretic effect is mainly associated with a decrease in tubular reabsorption of water, sodium and chloride ions. Compared with caffeine theobromine causes mild excitation of the central nervous system.

Applied mainly with sparse cerebral spasms, sometimes with swelling due to cardiac and renal insufficiency.

It is part of a number of combined tablets. The previously produced "Temisal" (Themisalum, synonymous with Dauretin), which is a combination of theobromine with sodium salicylate and used as a moderately active diuretic and vasodilator, has recently been excluded from the nomenclature of medicines (due to low efficiency and lack of stability) .
