Analog of prednisolone. By activity is close to prednisolone, but almost does not have mineralocorticoid (sodium-containing) activity, which provides better tolerability. It is slowly absorbed when administered intramuscularly and has a longer lasting effect than hydrocortisone and prednisolone.

Indications for use are the same as for prednisolone, but methylprednisolone is in some cases more active, better tolerated.

Produced in tablets of 0.004 g (4 mg) and 0.016 g (16 mg). In soluble form (in the form of sodium succinate) - in ampoules of 0.02 and 0.04 g (20 and 40 mg) for adults and 0.008 g (8 mg) for children (dry powder with ampoule with solvent - sterile water For injections), as well as in ampoules with a ready solution of 40 mg per ml.

When bronchial asthma is prescribed inside, starting with 12 - 40 mg per day; Maintenance dose of 4 to 12 mg per day. When chronic polyarthritis is prescribed, starting from 6 - 20 mg per day. When rheumatism begins with a dose of 0.8-1.5 mg / kg, then gradually reduce it.

In acute cases, adults are injected into the muscles or into a vein (drip or very slowly) to adults 20 to 40 mg, to children 8 to 16 mg, then they switch to taking the drug inside.

A solution of methylprednisolone, if necessary, is injected into the joint cavity (10-40 mg), into the abdominal and pleural cavity (up to 100 mg), under the conjunctiva (up to 20 mg).

There are data on epidural administration of methylprednisolone (80 mg in 10 ml of isotonic sodium chloride solution) in the treatment of discogenic radiculitis.

Large doses of methylprednisolone (or prednisolone) were used to treat especially severe forms of lupus nephritis.

Contraindications to the appointment of methylprednisolone and possible complications are the same as when using other glucocorticosteroids.

The prolonged drug "Depomedrol" (Depot-Medrol) * represents a 40% suspension of methylprednisolone acetate; Is issued in ampoules of 1 and 2 ml.
