Medication Description: Lipoic Acid (Acidum lipoicum)
LIPOEIC ACID (Acidum lipoicum). 6, 8-Dithioooctanoic acid.
Synonyms: Acidum thiocticum, Biletan, Heparlipon, Protogen, Thioctacid, Thioctan, Tioctacid, Tioctan and others.
A crystalline powder of light yellow color, bitter taste, with a specific smell. Practically insoluble in water, easily soluble in alcohol. Sodium salt of lipoic acid is highly soluble in water.
Lipoic acid is a coenzyme involved in the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid and a-keto acids, and plays an important role in the process of energy formation in the body. By the nature of the biochemical action of lipoic acid is close to the vitamins of group B.
Lipoic acid is involved in the regulation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, has a lipotropic effect, affects cholesterol metabolism, improves liver function, has a detoxifying effect when poisoning with heavy metal salts and other intoxications.
In the body is in different organs, especially a lot of it in the liver, kidneys, heart. For use as a medicine, it is obtained synthetically.
It is used for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes in the treatment of coronary atherosclerosis, liver disease (Botkin's disease - mild and moderate course, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis), diabetic polyneuritis, intoxication. There is evidence of the use of lipoic acid (in combination with other drugs) in the treatment of patients with acne.
Is taken orally in the form of tablets after meals at 0.025 - 0.05 g 2 - 3 times a day. Intramuscularly administered with 2 to 4 ml of a 0.5% solution (0.01-0.02 g) per day. The average duration of treatment is 20 days. If necessary, repeat the treatment after a break, lasting 1 month.
Children under the age of 7 years appoint inside 0.012 grams, older than 7 years - 0.012-0.024 grams 2 to 3 times a day.
When taking the drug may dyspeptic symptoms (pain in the epigastric region, heartburn), skin allergic rashes. Caution must be exercised when prescribing the drug to patients with hyperacid gastritis and gastric ulcer, as well as with a tendency to allergic reactions.
