SODIUM BROMIDE (Natrii bromidum).

Synonyms: Natrium bromatum, Sodium Bromide.

White crystalline powder odorless, salty taste. Hygroscopic. Soluble in water (1: 1, 5) and alcohol (1: 10). Solutions (рH 6, 0 - 7, 0) are sterilized at + 100 C for 30 min.

Bromine preparations have the ability to concentrate and enhance the processes of inhibition in the cerebral cortex, they can restore equilibrium between the processes of excitation and inhibition, especially with increased excitability of the central nervous system.

In the past, bromine preparations have been widely used as sedatives and anticonvulsants. At present, they are used less often, but they have not lost their significance.

Apply bromide preparations for neurasthenia, neuroses, hysteria, increased irritability, insomnia, initial forms of hypertension, as well as epilepsy and chorea.

Sodium bromide is prescribed inside (before meals) in solutions (medicines), tablets; Is also administered intravenously. The choice of dose should be individualized depending on the type of higher nervous activity, the nature and course of the disease. Doses for adults from 0.1 to 1 g 3 - 4 times a day. The average dose for children under the age of 1 year is 0.05-0.1 g, up to 2 years 0.15 g, 3-4 years 0.2 g, 5-6 years 0.25 g, 7-9 Years - 0,3 g, 10 - 14 years - 0,4 - 0,5 g.

In the treatment of epilepsy, the drug is prescribed starting from a dose of 1-2 grams (adults) per day, gradually increasing it every week by 1-2 g to a daily dose of 6-8 g. At the same time, the intake of table salt is limited (up to 5-10 g Salt at a dose of sodium bromide 4 - 5 g), which enhances the therapeutic effect.

With long-term administration of bromides, side effects (<bromism>) are possible: runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, general lethargy, memory loss, skin rash (acne bromica). In these cases (in the absence of contraindications, large amounts of sodium chloride (10-20 g per day) are administered into the body in combination with a large amount of water (3-5 liters per day).
