Description of the medicine: Sodium bromide (Natrii bromidum)
SODIUM BROMID (Natrii bromidum).
Synonyms: Natrium bromatum, Sodium Bromide.
Flavourless white crystalline powder, salty taste. Hygroscopic. Soluble in water (1: 1, 5) and alcohol (1: 10). Solutions (pH 6, 0 - 7, 0) are sterilized at + 100 ° C for 30 minutes.
Bromine preparations have the ability to concentrate and enhance inhibition processes in the cerebral cortex; they can restore equilibrium between the processes of excitation and inhibition, especially with increased excitability of the central nervous system.
In the past, bromine preparations have been widely used as sedatives and anticonvulsants. Currently, they are used less frequently, but they have not lost their significance.
Bromine preparations are used for neurasthenia, neurosis, hysteria, increased irritability, insomnia, the initial forms of hypertension, as well as for epilepsy and chorea.
Sodium bromide is prescribed orally (before meals) in solutions (potions), tablets; also administered intravenously. The choice of dose should be individualized depending on the type of higher nervous activity, the nature and course of the disease. Doses for adults from 0.1 to 1 g 3 to 4 times a day. Average doses for children under the age of 1 year are 0.05 - 0.1 g, up to 2 years - 0.15 g, 3 - 4 years - 0.2 g, 5 - 6 years - 0.25 g, 7 - 9 years - 0.3 g; 10 - 14 years old - 0.4 - 0.5 g.
In the treatment of epilepsy, the drug is prescribed starting from a dose of 1 - 2 g (adults) per day, gradually increasing it every week by 1 - 2 g to a daily dose of 6 - 8 g. At the same time, consumption of sodium chloride with food is limited (up to 5 - 10 g salt at a dose of sodium bromide 4 - 5 g), which enhances the therapeutic effect.
With prolonged intake of bromides, side effects (<bromism>) are possible: runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, general lethargy, memory loss, skin rash (acne bromica). In these cases (in the absence of contraindications, large amounts of sodium chloride (10 - 20 g per day) are introduced into the body in combination with a large amount of water (3 - 5 l per day).
It is necessary to achieve regular bowel movements, rinse your mouth, and often wash your skin.
Method of release: powder; tablets of 0.5 g, 3% solution.
Storage: in a well-sealed container, which protects from the action of light, in a dry place.
For use in children's practice, sodium bromide solution (1%, 2% and 3%) with fruit syrup (Solutio Natrii bromidi cum sirupo fructuario), as well as sodium bromide solution (1%) and potassium bromide (1%) with fruit syrup are produced (Solutio Natrii bromidi et Kalii bromidi cum sirupo fluctuario).
Assign in doses corresponding to age-related doses of sodium bromide and potassium bromide, and according to indications. Average doses for children under the age of 1 year - 1 teaspoon, 2 years - 1 dessert spoon, 3 - 4 years - 1, 5 dessert spoons, 5 - 6 years - 1 tablespoon, 7 - 9 years - 1, 5 tablespoon tablespoons, 10-14 years - 2 tablespoons 3 times a day.
Release form: in glass bottles on 100 ml.
Storage: in a cool, dark place.
