Congenital cysts of the lungs

Congenital cysts of the lungs . Cysts can be airy or filled with fluid, single or multiple. They arise in that period of embryogenesis, when bronchi and alveoli are formed. When organogenesis is disturbed in the early stages, single cysts are formed, and later-multiple small cysts are formed.

Clinical symptoms largely depend on the presence or absence of complications: suppuration of the cyst, its penetration into the pleural cavity, the development of the syndrome of intra-thoracic tension. With suppuration of cysts, symptoms of intoxication increase, body temperature rises. The tension of the cyst arises when there is a valve mechanism in the places where it communicates with the bronchus. The clinical picture of a strained cyst is characterized by symptoms of increasing cardiopulmonary insufficiency. On the side of the lesion, a boxed tone of sound and a weakening of the breath are noted. A similar picture takes place when pneumothorax occurs.

On radiographs and especially on tomograms, it is possible to identify contours of the cyst, symptoms of intrathoracic tension.

Treatment operative; Sometimes it is possible to perform excision of the cysts, more often it is necessary to resort to resection of the lobe or segment of the lung. In uncomplicated cases, the outlook is favorable.
