Mastoiditis acute

Mastoiditis acute - acute inflammation of the tissues of the mastoid process; Is more often a complication of acute purulent inflammation of the middle ear (secondary mastoiditis). Primary mastoiditis develops as an independent disease due to trauma or sepsis. Subperiosteal abscess or pus penetrates into the cranial cavity and causes intracranial complications.

Symptoms, course. Pain, swelling and hyperemia of the outer covers of the region of the mastoid process, purulence from the ear. With otoscopy, the external auditory canal is narrowed by lowering its posterior walls. Headache, insomnia, loss of appetite are noted. The temperature rises to 38.5 g. C, but often remains subfebrile.

Mastoiditis can develop for several days, sometimes several weeks, months. Differentiate from behind-the-ear abscess (with furuncle of external auditory canal or suppuration of lymph nodes). Much importance in the diagnosis of mastoiditis has an x-ray study.

Treatment conservative: treatment of acute otitis media. Operation - anthromastoidotomy - is indicated for pronounced destructive changes in the mastoid process. Absolute indications for surgery are signs of a process transition to the meninges, sigmoid sinus or labyrinth, paralysis of the facial nerve, subperiosteal abscess.
