Neuropathy of the facial nerve

Neuropathy of the facial nerve. Etiology, pathogenesis. Otitis, fracture of the temporal bone, swelling of the cerebellar angle; Idiopathic form (Bell's paralysis) is associated with hypothermia. Mechanical compression in secondary forms, edema and ischemia in cases of Bell's paralysis.

Symptoms, course. Bell paralysis is usually preceded by pain in the region of the mastoid process, after which one-sided paralysis of mimic muscles develops acutely. The patient can not raise an eyebrow, close his eyes (lagophthalmus), and when teeth are grinning, the mouth slit is pulled into a healthy side. Depending on the level of nerve damage in case of facial muscle paralysis, there may be no tearing and a loss of taste on the front2 /, of the tongue on the side of paralysis. Recovery in favorable cases lasts from several weeks to several months, in the elderly - up to 1-2 years. Paralysis can be complicated by contracture of the affected muscles.

Treatment. In the idiopathic form - acetylsalicylic acid at 1.5-2 g per day, furosemide, thionicol or nicotinic acid, in some cases prednisolone at 40 mg per day; Massage, physiotherapy exercises. Effective treatment of contractures mimic muscles there.

Forecast. Worse in the elderly. Approximately 15% of cases of recovery does not occur or contracture of paralyzed muscles and synkinesin.
