False joint (pseudoarthrosis)

False joint (pseudarthrosis) - mobility over the bone as a result of non-fracture.

Etiology. Infection, blood supply disorder of the bone, mobility of fragments, most often occurring when the cast is prematurely removed. As a result, in the fracture zone, the connective and cartilaginous tissue develops instead of the bone. Occasionally, false joints are congenital (violation of intrauterine bone development).

Symptoms, course. Often, the limb is curved at the level of a false joint, pain in it, a violation of the supporting function of the leg, or a decrease in the function of the arm. With the so-called tight joints (massive development of the scar between fragments, radiologically small gap between them), pain and function impairment may not be present.

The diagnosis is confirmed radiologically.

Treatment. With pain and loss of function, surgical treatment is indicated. With contraindications to it - wearing orthopedic devices.

Prevention: strict adherence to the timing of immobilization
