Carbuncle

Carbuncle - purulent inflammation of several hair pouches and subcutaneous fat around them. Favorite localization is the occipital region and back. The transition of a boil to a carbuncle is facilitated by its traumatization, diabetes mellitus.

Symptoms, course. Painful infiltration with a sharp flushing of the skin, where there are several fistulous holes with a purulent detachable and necrotic bottom. Infiltration is sometimes quite significant, without clear boundaries. The temperature is high, in the blood - leukocytosis with a shift of the formula to the left.

Treatment operative. Under general anesthesia, a broad cross-sectional dissection of the infiltrate with excision of necrotic tissue is performed. If, despite a sufficient incision, inflammatory changes progress, massive antibiotic therapy is indicated. The outlook is usually favorable.
