Pneumonia is an acute inflammation of the lung tissue, caused in most cases by various microorganisms. Only in some cases the disease is caused by other causes (for example, stagnant pneumonia can occur with prolonged bed rest).

The most common infection occurs by airborne droplets , when in contact with a sick person (when coughing, sneezing, talking), the pathogenic microflora is inhaled. A hematogenic pathway of infection is possible, when the pathogen enters the lungs with blood flow (for example, with sepsis, other infectious diseases). There is also an endogenous mechanism for the development of inflammation of the lung tissue, which is caused by the activation of already existing microorganisms in the body. Factors contributing to the development of pneumonia are chronic lung diseases, nasopharynx, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, prolonged bed rest, decreased immunity, smoking, alcohol abuse, etc. Children and the elderly are also at risk.

Symptoms of pneumonia

Cough. Cough can be dry or with the release of sputum (mucous, mucopurulent, bloody). "Rusty" sputum is typical for croupous pneumonia, bloody stinging - for pneumonia caused by Friedlander's stick, purulent bloody sputum is secreted with streptococcal pneumonia. If the sputum gets a putrid smell, then this may indicate an inflammation of the inflammatory focus.

Hemoptysis is one of the symptoms of pneumonia caused by fungi, a combination of hemoptysis and pain in the side is a sign of a lung infarction.

Pain in the chest . Pain in the chest area with pneumonia can be superficial and deep. Superficial pains are a consequence of inflammation of the intercostal muscles, they usually intensify with a deep inspiration.

Deep pains are associated with the defeat or dilatation of the lung's membrane (pleura) and its inflammation. Usually they are very intense, intensified with deep breathing and coughing.

When the focus of inflammation is located in the lower parts of the lungs and involves the diaphragmatic pleura in the process, pain can spread to the abdominal cavity and cause a picture of the acute abdomen.

Shortness of breath (a feeling of lack of air) is one of the main signs of pneumonia. It is most pronounced in inflammations that develop against the background of chronic diseases of the bronchopulmonary system and heart failure. The degree of dyspnea usually corresponds to the severity of the general condition of the patient.

In addition to the symptoms described for pneumonia, one can not but note the manifestations of general intoxication of the body . The patient is concerned about chills , fever to 39 - 40 ° C, general weakness, sweating, poor appetite, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. In severely debilitated and elderly people, there may be a disorder of consciousness.

Diet

Before deciding on a diet, it is recommended to clean the patient of the stomach with some laxative. At the very beginning of focal inflammation it is useful to give hot or warm milk, adding a drop of purified turpentine to a glass of milk. In the food of the patient give broth, milk, but do not force to eat much, as food is violently very harmful. To lower the temperature, give water with lemon or cranberry juice. Very weak and old patients can give a little wine to raise their strength. Before the crisis it is good to give something diaphoretic - an infusion of lime-colored, mint or sage.

Traditional means of treating pneumonia

Treatment of pneumonia should begin as soon as possible, be comprehensive and be performed under the compulsory supervision of a physician.

  • Hospitalization of the patient in a hospital is obligatory. Treatment at home can be organized only if all the rules of the regime are observed and adequate care is provided. Patients who have developed the disease on the background of chronic or acute bronchial or lung diseases (for example, bronchitis), as well as patients with severe concomitant diseases, aggravating the course of pneumonia, elderly people and children are hospitalized necessarily. Compliance with this condition is necessary because delayed, inferior treatment of even mild forms of pneumonia can lead to its protracted course and the adherence of complications.
  • Bed rest should be observed during the entire period of the disease, especially with fever and severe intoxication. But the patient is allowed to periodically change position, sit down and cough up phlegm. These measures are important for the purpose of providing adequate drainage and ventilation of the lungs. Sputum should be collected in a mayonnaise jar and covered with a lid.
  • The patient's room should be regularly ventilated and wet cleaned daily.
  • Of particular importance is the careful care of the oral cavity and skin.
  • The diet of the patient should be high-calorie, rich in vitamins, microelements. At a high temperature and severe symptoms of intoxication, food should be given in a wiped, liquid or semi-liquid form. The liquid should enter the body in the form of broths, juices and mineral water.
  • Mandatory treatment of patients with pneumonia is the appointment of antibiotics. However, before prescribing drugs it is necessary to sputum culture to determine the specific type of pathogen. But this analysis will not be ready immediately, and treatment should be prescribed immediately. To do this, resort to the appointment of broad-spectrum antibiotics that affect any microbial flora. Treatment should be carried out under laboratory control, because microbes very quickly become insensitive to a certain kind of drug. And if this happens, the antibiotic should be changed. Antibacterial drugs should be used in such doses and at intervals such that the dose of the drug that has a curative effect is maintained in the blood and in the lung tissue.
The dose and number of antibacterial drugs depend on the severity of the course of the disease (this criterion is determined clinically, for symptoms such as temperature, intoxication, dyspnea, cough, and sputum) and the prevalence of the process, which is determined radiographically.
  • Antibiotic therapy should be combined with the appointment of anti-inflammatory and desensitizing drugs (ascorbic acid, calcium chloride, calcium gluconate, antihistamines).
  • With a slow resolution of the infiltrate, the presence of symptoms of suffocation, taking into account contra-indications, a short course is prescribed hormonal preparations. Glucocorticosteroids in large doses are prescribed for patients with severe forms of the disease, with extensive infiltrates in the lung tissue and in the absence of a positive effect on the therapy.
  • Other important aspects of treatment are the drainage of the bronchi and the restoration of the patency of the bronchial tree. To this end, the patient is prescribed broncho-lytic, expectorant drugs. The althea root, acetylcysteine, thermopsis, plantain leaf, hot milk with soda and honey have such properties. These funds dilute sputum well. With an unproductive obtrusive cough, antitussive drugs are prescribed.
  • 10. In severe pneumonia with dyspnea, cyanosis, the patient is shown hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • Oxygen therapy is also prescribed for patients with severe concomitant lung diseases, which can cause a serious complication - respiratory failure. These diseases include emphysema of the lungs, long-term bronchitis with frequent exacerbations, pneumosclerosis.
  • Patient pneumonia is important to restore the body's defenses. To do this, they are injected with gamma globulin. Pursuing the same goal, patients are also prescribed vitamins (especially in this situation, vitamin C, B vitamins are important). Also used are biogenic stimulants and adaptogenes - aloe, ginseng root, lemongrass, etc.
  • Analgesics are used to relieve the pain syndrome, sometimes the leading one in the clinic of this disease.
  • In elderly patients, cardiovascular agents are prescribed to prevent cardiovascular failure.
  • Apply also distracting therapy: mustard, wraps.
  • To accelerate the resolution of infiltrates and prevent complications, physiotherapy is widely used.

Control of treatment is necessarily carried out and radiographically with the stipulated terms.

After recovery, it is desirable to have a sanatorium and spa treatment.
