Bleeding from the ears

If you are an adult and your ear is sometimes covered, you probably have eczema or other skin irritation in the ear canal. And, hopefully, you do not have the habit of scrubbing sulfur from your ears with a pin or toothpick. The basic rule : never immerse in the ear anything less than the tip of your little finger . Even cotton swabs should be used only to clean the visible outer parts. Children in particular should be taught this rule, because they stuff everything in their ears at their fingertips, and each object can irritate the ear, cause bleeding and damage the eardrum.

If the membrane becomes infected , there may be a trickle of blood from the ear. Trauma , such as a blow to the head, loud deafening sounds (a shot near) and a sudden change in pressure when flying on an airplane (especially when you have a cold) can damage the eardrum and cause bleeding. If your nose also crocks or there are signs of bleeding elsewhere, then the problem is more general, not local. Or the seemingly "banal" head trauma resulted in damage to the skull , or you have a problem with the clotting system .
