Puffy tongue

There are people whose daily ritual is to watch their language in the mirror. Most of them do not have the faintest idea why they are considering it. They usually confirm for themselves what they already know: the plaque on the tongue, the headache and spasms in the stomach are the result of yesterday's drinking. They rarely pay attention to the size of the tongue, because a small increase is difficult to notice. But the next time you examine your language, take a look, did not it become more compared to the last time. If so, the most likely cause is an allergic reaction to something that you ate, or to the medicine that you took. Aspirin, for example, often causes swelling of the tongue. Hives somewhere on the body will indicate its allergic origin.

Other causes of swollen tongue.

Severely reduced function of the thyroid gland .

A pituitary tumor that causes the gland to produce too much growth hormone, which leads to a significant increase in the tongue (as well as the fingers, toes) and jaw (acromegaly).

Acute streptococcal infection in the mouth. Today it happens rarely, but if it happens, the tongue becomes enlarged and painful. Yeast infections after prolonged use of antibiotics can also increase the size of the tongue.

A condition known as amyloidosis , in which the altered body protein settles in the tongue, causing it to increase. The same altered protein is deposited in the heart, liver, kidneys and virtually in any other organ of the body. This is a serious disease.

Leukemia and other malignant diseases can infiltrate the language, dramatically increasing its size.
