Botanical characteristic. Perennial herbaceous plant. Rhizome creeping, thin. The stems are numerous tetrahedral, reddish, covered with soft hairs. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, oblong-ovate. The flowers are small, purple, collected in panicles. The fruit is a dark brown nut, slightly compressed, finely punctate. It blooms in July - August, bears fruit in August - September.
Spread. Widely distributed over most of the country, prefers light forest edges, ravine slopes, bushes and roadsides.
Used parts of the plant. Medicinal raw material is the whole plant. The aerial part is collected during flowering. Oregano is pulled out with a root and dried; the roots are in the fall.
Chemical composition. All parts of the plant contain essential oil, triterpenoids (ursolic acid), phenol carboxylic acids, coumarins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, organic acids, diterpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, vitamins. Inflorescences contain higher aliphatic alcohols; fatty oil in the seeds.
Application. In folk medicine, oregano preparations in the form of infusions and decoctions of the aerial part and roots are used for female diseases, pulmonary tuberculosis, convulsions of various origins, stroke, asthenia, flatulence, headache, whooping cough, respiratory infections, gastritis, hepatitis, dyspepsia, diarrhea, rheumatism , bronchial asthma, neuralgia, rickets, gonorrhea, with various skin diseases and rashes, eczema, boils, as wound healing, to strengthen hair.
In scientific and practical medicine, they are used as an expectorant that enhances intestinal motility, diuretic, sedative, anticonvulsant, in the complex treatment of malignant neoplasms, with cholecystitis, biliary tract diseases, acute and chronic bronchitis, enterocolitis; part of breast and diaphoretic tea; in collections - with angina in the form of rinses, with skin diseases, diathesis, eczema, vitiligo - in the form of lotions; with chronic sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, tracheobronchitis - in the form of inhalation.
Decoctions of the roots used in epilepsy, foot hyperhidrosis, rheumatism, skin diseases, accompanied by a rash. Fresh juice has an antibacterial effect.
In the experiment, oregano preparations have a pronounced diuretic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory effect, reduce blood pressure for a short time, and exhibit protistocidal activity. The extract is an effective anthelmintic.
In the peoples of many countries, oregano is used to alleviate the condition of women in the menopause, hence its popular name "motherboard"; with edema, for the treatment of neurosis, with disorders of sexual function in men; in obstetric and gynecological practice; as an increasing function of the thyroid gland.
Oregano herb extract is included in the complex preparation “Urolesan”, which is used as an antispasmodic and promotes the secretion of stones from the ureters, enhances bile formation and biliary excretion, and is an antiseptic that reduces the inflammatory process in the urinary tract.
In Indian medicine, it is part of ointments and balms used for rheumatism, paralysis, cuts, toothache, earaches, and neuralgia. Flowers - in the composition of ointments for eczema. A decoction of the fruit is an antiemetic.

Homeopathy. The homeopathic preparation Origanum 3x, 3, 6 is indicated for neurocirculatory dystonia, autonomic disharmonious myocardial dystrophy, menopause complaints, as an antispasmodic for gastrointestinal diseases.
Cooking. To prepare the infusion, take 20 g of crushed dried herbs, pour 200 ml of boiling water, insist 15 minutes in a boiling water bath, cool for 45 minutes, filter, bring to 200 ml, squeezing the grass. Take 1/3 cup 3 times a day after meals.
Oregano is often used with other medicinal plants: chamomile flowers, coltsfoot, calamus root, birch buds, etc.
