Botanical characteristics. Perennial herbaceous plant. It grows in coniferous forests, in thickets of pine cedar.

The root is thin, creeping. Stem up to 40 cm tall. The leaves are round-ovoid, unclear, almost entire. The flowers are small, about 15 mm across. Petals are purple-red. Inflorescence is a brush. Fruit is a box. Blossoms in May - June, fruits ripen in June - July.

Used parts of the plant. Medicinal raw materials are the aerial part of the plant, leaves, flowers, less often roots and seeds harvested in the usual way.

Chemical composition. The roots of the wintergreen meat-red contain organic acids, steroids, quinones. In the above-ground part there are triterpene-noids (tarakserol), iridoids (monotropein), phenols and their derivatives (homoarbutin), vitamins, trace elements, pigments.

Application. The aerial part of the plant in the form of decoctions and infusions is used in folk medicine for gastrointestinal diseases, radiculitis, colds, hernia, with various bleeding, mainly in the postpartum period, heart disease, kidney disease.

In Tibetan medicine, pears are used for liver diseases, bone tuberculosis, inflammatory processes of female organs, as antipyretic and wound healing.

In Chinese medicine, leaves and flowers are used for poisoning, as an antidote for biting animals and insects, as an analgesic and haemostatic agent: externally with various skin diseases, with purulent blepharitis, for rinsing the throat and mouth.

The plant is of great interest and continues to be studied as a drug in connection with a wide range of medicinal properties.

Preparation

  • To prepare the infusion take 20 g of leaves and flowers, pour 200 ml of boiling water, insist on a water bath for 15 minutes, cool 45 minutes, filter. Take 1/3 cup 3 times a day.
  • For broth 15 g of roots or seeds, pour 180 ml of boiling water, insist on a boiling water bath for 30 minutes, cool for 10 minutes, filter, make up to 180 ml. Take should be 2 tbsp. Spoon 3-4 times a day after meals.
