DISEASE - sudden involuntary discharge into the oral cavity of gas from the stomach or esophagus, sometimes with small portions of stomach contents.

Normally, there is always a gas in the stomach that stimulates its motor and secretory functions. The amount of gas depends mainly on the amount of air swallowed during meals. The increase of gas in the stomach is facilitated by the use of carbonated drinks, as well as some food products, such as cabbage, peas, beans, etc. Usually, gas from the stomach gradually exits through the mouth or the gatekeeper. With its excess content in the stomach, the intragastric pressure increases, the muscles of the stomach contract with the simultaneous relaxation of the cardiac sphincter and spasm of the pylorus, which determines the eruption. Ebearing occurs most often with diseases of the stomach and duodenum. It can also be observed in diseases of the liver, gallbladder, cardiovascular system (for example, with myocardial infarction).

An eructation of air, which is odorless, is usually observed with the usual ingestion of air (see Aerophagia) or increased formation of gas in the stomach. The delay in emptying the stomach, for example, with gastric cancer or peptic ulcer with stenosis of the pylorus, and resulting stagnation and decomposition of the gastric contents, can lead to the formation of hydrocarbons, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide in the stomach, which gives an unpleasant odor of rotten eggs.

Eating food, in which, along with the gas, small portions of liquid gastric contents enter the oral cavity, can be acidic, bitter or putrefactive. Sour eructations are usually observed with peptic ulcer and is caused by high acidity of gastric contents due to hypersecretion of gastric juice or fermentation in the absence of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice. Bitter eructations are noted as a result of throwing bile into the stomach, putrefactive - with prolonged stagnation in the stomach and putrefactive decomposition of its contents.

To eliminate eructations, the main disease is treated. In all cases, from the diet, carbonated drinks and products that promote gas formation or stay long in the stomach are excluded. Food is recommended to be taken often, in small portions. When hypersecretion of gastric juice antacids are prescribed.
