VIRILISM - appearance in women of secondary male sexual characteristics. To such attributes carry a hairs on a man's type, a rough, low voice, a man's constitution. There are also atrophy of the mammary glands and hypertrophy of the clitoris. Virilism develops as a result of excessive formation of male sex hormones - androgens by the adrenal glands or ovaries with the presence of an androgen-producing tumor in these organs or with an increase in the synthesis of these hormones of non-tumor origin. Symptoms of virilism can also be observed with various endocrine diseases, for example, with acromegaly. A woman who developed symptoms of virilism should be examined by an endocrinologist and gynecologist.
