Hematoma is a limited accumulation of blood in tissues due to bleeding. In this case, a cavity filled with blood is formed in them. Hematomas occur when the vessels are ruptured as a result of a stroke or bruise, or when blood coagulability is violated. The occurrence of hematomas is facilitated by pathological changes in the vessels, for example, atherosclerosis . Hematomas can form under the skin, periosteum, in muscles, mucous membranes, in internal organs, etc.

Small superficial hematomas, caused by contusion of soft tissues, represent a painful swelling with bruising. Their appearance can often be prevented by properly providing first aid in case of injury. With timely treatment, these hematomas usually pass without a trace. In the case of extensive hematomas, for example, intermuscular, the injured person should be referred to a doctor. In case of injuries, when there are data for a bruise of the brain, liver, spleen, etc., the injured person should immediately be sent to a medical institution, since hematomas, dangerous to life, such as subdural hematoma, may occur in addition to other injuries.
