GONIT - inflammation of the knee joint. Infectious agents enter the joint cavity if it is damaged, hematogenous or lymphogenous.

Acute perspiration is manifested by an increase in the joint volume, local soreness, an increase in skin temperature, pain in joint movements. The contours of the joint are smoothed out, the leg takes a forced bent at the knee joint position. Exudate accumulates in the joint cavity. With purulent persecution, the skin over the joint becomes swollen, hyperemic, passive and active movements in the joint are sharply painful, limited. Purulent melting of the articular bag, surrounding tissues, a breakthrough of purulent exudate in the tissue of the thigh and lower leg is possible. The general condition of the patient in these cases is severe, the body temperature rises to 39 ° C, chills are observed, and sepsis may develop. With chronic persecution, local manifestations (fever, joint pain, swelling, impaired function) are less pronounced.

Treatment should be carried out in a hospital. The main condition for the successful treatment of gonitis is the immobilization of the joint with a plaster bandage with a slight bending at the knee joint (5 - 10 °). Puncture and arthroscopy of the knee joint make it possible to perform cytological and bacteriological studies of exudate, to determine the sensitivity of the isolated microflora to antibiotics, to introduce medicines directly into the pathological focus.
