It never occurred to you to ask what is taking up so much space in the Windows directory on your hard drive? There you can get through the Explorer and any of the file managers (such as FAR, Windows Commander or similar). Programmers from Microsoft-a provided a wonderful "protection from a fool" - if you try to go to the Explorer in the directory of the system, there will be a terrible inscription: "Changing this folder may lead to incorrect operation of the programs." And it is right! Of course, if you thoroughly erase everything that is there, then there will come a time when the reinstallation of Windows will become inevitable, like the fall of a brick thrown up. But we are not going to wash everything! First, just see what's there. Maybe that is useful ...

The first in the alphabetical list is the Command directory. If you prefer the stability of the system to satisfied curiosity, then do not start anything.

Bootdisk.bat
- Creates a boot floppy.

Choice.com
- gives you the opportunity to answer Yes / No. The result is one.

Deltree.com
- with the path specified, it erases the specified path.

Diskcopy.com
- copies the floppy disk one by one to another. If you write "Diskcopy.com?" At the command prompt. - Get help (applies to most other programs).

Edit.com
- A small text editor for DOS. Old, but sometimes useful, if Windows does not start.

Format.com
- disk format utility. "Format.com a: \ s" - makes the system floppy.

Mem.exe
- gives information about the distribution of memory for programs and not only.

Scandisk.exe
- disk check for failures. It is necessary to type "Scandisk.exe with:" to check the drive "C".

Scanreg.exe
- checks and reserves the registry - the heart of the system. It is better to save it once more, if it fails, it will come in handy.

The rest can (and better) not touch. In any case, this is an emergency folder designed to work under DOS when restoring the computer's performance after critical failures.

The next stop is the Cursors folder. There are small graphical files, which appear on the screen in the form of arrows, hourglasses and other things. In a word, mouse cursors. If you are tired of the standard view of your arrow, find on the Internet a set of new cursors (the blessing from there is a lot of lying around) and overwrite it in this directory. Then in the Control Panel Mouse, Pointers to change everything you want.

The Fonts folder contains all the fonts you can print. But simply copying a new font to this folder will not do anything. You have to go through the Control Panel.

Catalog (the same as the folder, just on the side) Help contains a lot of help on all sorts of issues. Even if you already know and saw a lot, climb there. Still find out something new. I especially want to highlight the following files:

Calc.chm
- help on a standard calculator.

Common.chm
- useful tips for working with data and files. (As Microsoft sees it).

Getstart.chm
- Very useful guide for beginners to work with Windows. You can finally find out how it should be.

Iexplore.chm
- the same useful guide to Internet Explorer and the Internet.

Update.chm
- Help on the Desktop and folders.

Windows.chm
- Great help on Windows.

If you are curious and you have time, review the rest of the help files. Can that interesting learn. When I first saw these deposits, I was happy for a long time, learning that I was using the system almost as it was intended by its creators.

In the folder Media you will find standard and non-standard sounds, as well as several music files, it is unknown why hidden in such a distance.

The Temp directory is a repository of garbage. Sometimes necessary, sometimes not. In most cases it is necessary to clean it.

The folder Temporary Internet Files contains all sorts of pictures, html files, saved by Internet Explorer. The latter has the property of inflating the amount of information stored here. Set up your browser - save space.

Folders The main menu and the Desktop contain the shortcuts that you can see in the menu that appears on the Start button or on the Desktop, respectively. If you want, you can directly add here or directly from here remove any shortcuts that interest you (or no longer).

And then there are all the tuning and working files, among which some "whiskers" are hiding. I will not talk about those that can be run in a simple way from somewhere in the menu. I'll tell you about the hidden ones.

Charmap.exe -
"Symbol table". The program allows you to select any symbol (or several) of all possible (from any font) to copy and paste where necessary.

Config.txt
- Information about the commands used in the MS-DOS file CONFIG.SYS

Display.txt
- Information about monitors and adapters for Windows. Look, maybe your problem there is described?

Faq.txt
- Frequently asked questions on Windows. It is interesting to see.

General.txt
And Hardware.txt - mainly contain information about various problems that may occur when your computer is running Windows 98.

Drwatson.exe
- a program for testing the system. With normal setup, it will only find a problem with the keyboard language indicator. Can compile reports for Microsoft technical support.

Regedit.exe
- Registry editing program. If you are not an advanced user, it is better not to touch the registry, although if you know what you're doing, it's completely safe.

In the System directory, you can also find some interesting sticks.

Msconfig.exe
- System Setup. You can see what the system ordered in its configuration files. It is especially interesting to see who lives in the AutoLoad. There may unexpectedly be trojans and programs that you have already erased, which is not good. Take off their tick marks and enjoy ...

Sfc.exe
Is a very useful program. If you erased some system file or something fails, use this utility - check the status of the system files and restore from the distribution of the system those that are damaged or older than in the distribution.

Sysedit.exe
- utility for easy editing of system files.

All the files mentioned above (I mean programs) are launched from the command line or from the Start menu, Run. For utilities that configure the system or edit the registry, this is important.

I must say that most of the files I found were just browsing through the system catalog and boring everything that comes to hand. I hope, now it will be easier for you to understand the abundance that devours the disk space.

And once again I want to remind you - be careful with what you launch! Until you develop an intuition that will prompt you that "this is not worth touching," it's better not to be very curious.
