Windows XP: Speed up the Windows XP interface

In the event that you do not have too much RAM, you may need to turn off visual effects (for example, a smooth menu deployment) for more comfortable work, which undoubtedly slows down the system. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon in the menu that appears, select "Properties"; Then in the "System Properties" dialog box, go to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Options" button from the "Performance" area.

2. In the "Performance Options" window on the "Visual Effects" tab, you can turn off each of them individually or all at once, by selecting "Ensure the best performance".

3. Click OK.

4. Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

5. Open the [HKEY_CURRENT_ USER \ SYSTEM \ Control Panel \ Desktop] branch.

6. In the right pane of the Registry Editor, select the MenuShowDelay key. By default, its value is 400 - the delay time in milliseconds, after which there are drop-down menus.

7. Double-click this key, enter a value of "0" to eliminate the delay. If you set the value to "1", the animation effect will be blocked while minimizing / maximizing windows. Click OK.

8. Close Registry Editor and reboot the system.

To accelerate the launch of applications, and to free up some RAM, you can disable the Dr.Watson debugger, a special program that allows you to diagnose errors. To do this, do the following:
1. Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe);
2. Open the [HKEY_LOCAL_MA-CHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ AeDebug] branch;
3. In the right pane of the Registry Editor, double-click the Auto key and enter a value of "0". Click OK;
4. Close Registry Editor and reboot the system.

In addition, you can disable the download of unnecessary system services, which will also affect the increase in performance. I would like to note that this procedure is unsafe, as this can lead to the system's inoperability, therefore carefully check what you are doing. To perform this operation, perform the following steps:
1. Open "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu. Select "Administration", then in the appeared window go to the "Services" dialog. Here there is a list of services, each of which is marked with its current status and type of launch.
2. Double-click the name of the service you want to disable. In this case, you will go to the Properties dialog box, which has a "Startup Type" area with a drop-down menu. Here you need to select "Disconnected".
3. Click OK.
