Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years,
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
In the eighth year of his reign, while still a youth, he began to resort to the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year began to purify Judah and Jerusalem from the heights and [dedicated] trees and from carved and cast idols.
And they destroyed before his face the altars of Baal and the statues that towered over them; And he consecrated the trees, and the carved and cast idols broke and crushed to the dust, and scattered on the graves those who sacrificed to them,
And he burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and cleared away Judah and Jerusalem,
th And in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto the tribe of Naphtali, and in the devastated surroundings of them
th He destroyed the altars and [dedicated] trees, and broke the idols in the dust, and broke all the statues throughout the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

In the eighteenth year of his reign, after cleansing the land and the house [of God], he sent Shaphan, the son of Azzaliah, and Maaseiah the governor, and Joah, the son of Joahaz, the recorder, to renew the house of the Lord his God.
And they came to Hilkiah the high priest, and they gave the silver that was brought to the house of God, which the Levites, who were guarding at the threshold, gathered from Manasseh and Ephraim and all the rest of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
And put into the hands of the producers of works, attached to the house of the Lord, that they give it to the workers who worked in the house of the Lord, in the correction and renewal of the house.
eleven And they distributed carpenters and builders for the purchase of hewn stones and trees for ties and for covering the buildings that the kings of Judah ravaged.
These men acted honestly at work, and Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites of the sons of the Merari, and Zacharias and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites, and all the Levites who could play musical instruments, were placed in charge of their supervision.
They [were] preachers over the porters and observed all the workers at every job; Of the Levites, [there were] scribes, and overseers, and gatekeepers.

When they took out the silver that was brought into the house of the Lord, then Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the Lord, given by the hand of Moses.
And Hilkiah began, and said to Shaphan the scribe: I found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave that book to Shaphan.
And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought with the king the news: all that is entrusted to your slaves, they do;
th And they poured out the silver found in the house of the Lord, and delivered it into the hands of the preceptors and into the hands of the producers of the work.
And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, "The book was given to me by Hilkiah the priest." And Shafan read it before the king.
When the king heard the words of the law, he rent his clothes.
And the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Avdon, the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying,
Go and ask the Lord for me and for the rest of Israel and Judah for the words of this found book, because the wrath of the Lord is great that has kindled us because our fathers did not keep the Lord's words to do according to all that is written in this book.
And Hilkiah went also, and those that were from the king, to Aldan the prophetess, the wife of Shallum, the son of Tashkogath, the son of Hassra, the keeper of the garments, and she lived in the second part of Jerusalem, and talked with her about it.
And she said to them: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me:
Thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon all its inhabitants, all the curses written in the book which was read before the king of Judah,
Because they forsook Me and burned to the gods of others, to provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. And my wrath shall be kindled above this place, and not fade away.
th And to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, so say: Thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning the words that you heard:
th For your heart was softened, and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words about this place and about his inhabitants, and you humbled yourself before me, and tore your clothes, and wept before me, I also heard [you], says Lord.
Behold, I will bring you to your fathers, and you will be put in your tomb in peace, and your eyes will not see all the evil that I will bring to this place and to its inhabitants. And they brought the king an answer.

And the king sent, and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem,
thirty And the king went into the house of the LORD, and all the Jews and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests and the Levites, and all the people, from large to small; And he read aloud to them all the words of the book of the covenant found in the house of the Lord.
And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart and with all his soul, to fulfill the words of the covenant written in this book.
And the king commanded to confirm this to all who were in Jerusalem and in the land of Benjamin; And the inhabitants of Jerusalem began to act according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
And Josiah put all the abominations out of all the lands that are among the children of Israel, and commanded all who were in Israel to serve the LORD their God. And all the days of his life they did not depart from the Lord God of their fathers.
