The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the bodyguards, dismissed him from Rama, where he took him chained among the captives of Jerusalem and the Jews, who were being moved to Babylon.
The captain of the bodyguards took Jeremiah and said to him, "The Lord your God has spoken this evil to this place,
And the LORD brought him forth, and did as he said; Because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this has come upon you.
Now, behold, I release you this day from the chains that are in your hands: if it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, go, and I will have care for you; But if it is not good for you to go with me to Babylon, stay. Behold, the whole earth is before you; Wherever you like, and where you like to go, go there and go.
When he had not yet departed, he said, "Go to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon made ruler over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people; Or go wherever you like to go. And the captain of the bodyguards gave him food and a gift, and dismissed him.
th And Jeremiah came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and lived with him among the people that remained in the land.

th When all the commanders who were in the field, they and their people, heard that the king of Babylon had placed Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the ruler over the country, and entrusted him men and women, and children, and those of the poor country who had not been moved to Babylon;
Then came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Phanasmeth, and the sons of Ophi of Netothath, and Jezoniah the son of Mahath, they and their army.
Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam the son of Safan, swore to them and to their people, saying: Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans, stay on the earth and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be good for you;
And I will stay in Mizpah to stand before the Chaldeans who will come to us; You gather the wine and the summer fruits and oil and take them to your vessels, and live in your cities that have occupied.
eleven And all the Jews that were in the land of Moab, and between the sons of Ammon, and in Edom, and in all countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left part of the Jews and set up Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, over them:
And all the Jews returned from all the places to which they had been driven out, and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah to Mizpah, and they gathered a great deal of wine and summer fruit.
Meanwhile Johanan, the son of Kareia, and all the military commanders who were in the field, came to Gedaliah in Mizpah
And they said to him, "Do you know that Baalis king of the sons of Ammon sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to kill you?" But Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, did not believe them.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah told Gedaliah secretly in Mizpah: let me, I go and kill Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know; Why should he allow that he killed you, and that all the Jews that were gathered to you should be scattered, and that the remnant of Judah should perish?
But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, "Do not do this, for you are not telling the truth about Ishmael."
