Romans 7

Previous chapter Index Next chapter
Do you not know, brethren (for I speak to know the law) that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he lives?
A married woman is bound by law to her husband; but if her husband dies, she is loosed from the law.
Therefore, if the living husband marries another, she is called an adulteress; if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress, she marries another man.
So likewise ye, brethren, are dead to the law through the body of Christ, to belong to another, raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God.
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, [detected] law, did work in our members to bear fruit to death;
But now, by dying to the law, which were connected, we are freed from it, so that we serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

What shall we say then? Is [by] the law sin? Nothing. But I had not known sin, but by the law. For I would not have known lust, except the law had said, You shall not covet.
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, produced in me all desire: because without the law sin was dead.
I was alive without the law; but when the commandment came, sin revived,
and I died; and the commandment, which [this] life, I found to be death,
eleven For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me and through it killed.
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
So that which is good become death to me? In any way; but sin appear sin, through what is good cause my death, so that sin might become exceedingly sinful by the commandment.

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
I do not understand what to do, because it does not do what I want, but what I hate, that I do.
Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law that it is good,
and therefore is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; because the desire is present with me, but how to perform that could not be found.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I do not want, I do.
If I do that, I would not, no longer I who do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is adjacent to me.
For the inner being I delight in God's law;
but I see in my members another law warring against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
Wretched man I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
