In those days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man went from Bethlehem of Judah with his wife and two sons live in the country of Moab.
The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi, and the names of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion; [They were] Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. And they came into the country of Moab and remained there.
And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, and she was left with her two sons.
And they took them wives of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
But then both [her son], Mahlon and Chilion died, and the woman was left her two sons and her husband.

And she arose with her daughters in law and went back to the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
And she went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her. As they walked along the road, returning to the land of Judah,
Naomi said to her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house; May the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead and with me!
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each in the house of her husband! And she kissed them. But they lifted up their voice and wept
and they said, no, we will return with thee unto thy people.
eleven Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters; why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
Turn back, my daughters, go, for I am too old to be married. Yes, if I should say, `I have hope ', and even if I had this very same night with my husband, and then gave birth to sons -
Would ye wait for them till they were grown? whether you hesitate and do not get married? No, my daughters, it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone for me.
They lifted up their voice and began to cry again. And Orpah bye-law's wife, but Ruth clung to her.
[Naomi] said [Ruth]: Now, your daughter back to her people and to her gods; Turn again, and you're behind thy daughter in law.
But Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following you; Where you go, I will go, and where are you going to live there, and I will live; thy people shall be my people, and your God - my God;
Where you die, I will die there and be buried; May the LORD do so to me, and more also; but death part thee and me.
[Naomi], seeing that she was determined to go with her, she stopped speaking to her.

So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. When they came to Bethlehem, all the city was moved about them, and said, Is this Naomi?
She said to them: Call me not Naomi, call me Mara, for the Almighty has sent me a great sorrow;
I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty-handed; why call me Naomi, when the Lord made me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
So Naomi returned, and with her daughter-her Ruth the Moabite who came to the country of Moab, and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
