After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year: go and show yourselves to Ahab, and I will rain on the earth. |
2
And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was strong in Samaria. |
3
And Ahab called Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Obadiah was a very God-fearing man, |
4
And when Jezebel destroyed the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them in fifty cents, in caves, and fed them with bread and water. |
5
And Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water, and to all the streams on the earth; will we find where the grasses are, to feed us horses and hinnies and not to lose livestock." |
6th
And they divided the earth among themselves, to go around it: Ahab went especially on one road, and Obadiah went the other way in a special way. |
7th
When Obadiah walked along the road, behold, Elijah came to meet him. He recognized him and fell on his face and said: "Is this you, my lord Elijah?" |
8
He said to him: I; Go, tell your lord: 'Elijah is here.' |
9
He said: "What have I done that you betray your servant in the hands of Ahab to slay me?" |
10
The Lord your God lives! There is not a single people and a kingdom where my sovereign sent me to seek you; And when they told him that he was not there, he took an oath from that kingdom and people that they could not find you; |
eleven
And now you say: "Go, tell your master: Elijah is here." |
12
When I go away from you, then the Spirit of the Lord will carry you away, I do not know where; And if I go to notify Ahab, and he does not find you, he will kill me; And thy servant fears from his youth. |
13
Has not my master told me what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I concealed a hundred people of the prophets of the Lord, fifty people in caves and fed them with bread and water? |
14
And now you say: "Go, tell your lord: Elijah is here"; he will kill me. |
15
And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand! Today I will show myself to him. |
16
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him. So Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17th
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Are you this that embarrass Israel?" |
18
And Elijah said, I do not trouble Israel, but you and your father's house, because you despised the commandments of the Lord and go after the Baals; |
19
Now go and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the oak groves, eating from the table of Jezebel. |
20
And Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered all the prophets to mount Carmel.
21
And Elijah came near to all the people, and said, How long do you have to limp on both your knees? If the Lord is God, then follow Him; And if Baal, then follow it. And the people did not answer him a word. |
22
And Elijah said to the people, "I alone have remained a prophet of the Lord, and the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty." |
23
Let them give us two bulls, and let them choose one calf for themselves, and cut it, and put it in the wood, but let them not set fire; And I will prepare another calf and put it on wood, but I will not put fire on it; |
24
And you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord my God. That God who answers through fire is God. And all the people answered and said: All right. |
25
And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: Choose a young bull for yourselves, and prepare you first, for you are many; And call on the name of your god, but do not put fire. |
26th
And they took the calf that was given to them, and prepared, and called the name of Baal from morning till noon, saying: Baal, hear us! But there was no voice, no response. And they galloped by the altar that they had made. |
27th
At noon Elijah began to laugh at them and said: shout with a loud voice, for he is a god; Maybe he thought about it, or is busy with something, or on the road, or maybe he is asleep, so he will wake up! |
28
And they began to shout with a loud voice, and pricked themselves with their knives and spears, so that the blood poured over them. |
29
It was noon, and they were still raving until the time of the evening sacrifice; But there was no voice, no response, no hearing. |
thirty
Then Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came to him. He restored the destroyed altar of the Lord. |
31
And Elijah took the twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the Lord said thus: Israel will be your name. |
32
And he built an altar out of these stones in the name of the Lord, and made a pit around the altar, with a capacity of two sattes of grains, |
33
And he put wood, and cut the bullock, and put it on the wood, |
34
And said: Fill the four buckets of water and pour out on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood. Then he said: repeat. And they repeated it. And he said: Do the same for the third time. And they did it for the third time, |
35
And the water was poured around the altar, and the moat was filled with water. |
36
At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came and said: "Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel!" Let it be known this day that You are one God in Israel, and that I am Your servant and have done everything according to Your word. |
37
Hear me, O Lord, hear me! Let this people know that You, Lord, are God, and You will turn their heart [to You]. |
38
And the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and swallowed up the water that was in the trench. |
39
Seeing this, all the people fell on their faces and said: "The Lord is God, the Lord is God!" |
40
And Elijah said unto them, Seize the prophets of Baal, lest any of them hide themselves. And they took them, and Elijah led them to the torrent of Kishon, and killed them there.
41
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Go, eat and drink, for the sound of rain is heard. |
42
And Ahab went to eat and drink, and Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, and leaned to the ground, and put his face between his tribes, |
43
And he said to his servant, "Go, look to the sea." He went and looked, and said: there is nothing. He said: continue this up to seven times. |
44
For the seventh time he said: behold, a small cloud is rising from the sea, the size of a human hand. He said: Go, say to Ahab: "Harness [your chariot] and go so that the rain does not catch you." |
45
Meanwhile, the sky became gloomy from the clouds and from the wind, and a great rain began. Ahab also got into the chariot, and went to Jezreel. |
46
And the hand of Elohim was on Elijah. He girded his loins and fled before Ahab to Jezreel. |
