1 Kings 4

1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. And the Israelites came out against the Philistines to the war, and encamped at Aven-Ezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphaeus.
2 And the Philistines lined up against the Israelites, and there was a battle, and the Israelites were smitten by the Philistines, who beat about four thousand men on the battlefield.
3 And the people came to the camp; And the elders of Israel said, "Why did the Lord strike us today before the Philistines?" Let us take to us from Shiloh an ark of the covenant of the Lord, and he will go among us and save us from the hands of our enemies.
4 And the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who sat on the cherubim; And at the ark of the covenant of God there were also two sons of Elijah, Hophni and Phinehas.
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord arrived in the camp, all Israel raised such a strong cry that the earth moaned.
6th And the Philistines heard the noise of exclamations, and said: Why such loud exclamations in the camp of the Hebrews? And they learned that the ark of the Lord came to the camp.
7th And the Philistines were afraid: for they said, God came to them in the camp. And they said, Woe is us! For there was no such thing yesterday, nor the third day;
8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of this powerful God? This is the God who smote the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness;
9 Be strong and be strong, Philistines, lest you be enslaved to the Hebrews, as they are in your servitude; Be courageous and fight with them.

10 And the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were smitten, and everyone ran to his tent, and there was a great defeat, and thirty thousand foot soldiers fell from Israel.
eleven And the ark of God was taken, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

12 And one Benjamite fled from the place of battle, and came to Shiloh on the same day; His clothes were torn and the dust on his head.
13 When he came, Elijah sat on the seat by the road at the gate and looked, for his heart trembled at the ark of God. And when the man came and announced in the city, he loudly rebelled the entire city.
14 And Eli heard the sound of crying and said: "Why such a noise?" And immediately the man approached and announced to Elijah.
15 Elijah was then ninety-eight years old; And his eyes faded, and he could not see.
16 And the man said to Eli: I came from the camp, today I fled from the battlefield. And he said, What has happened, my son?
17th And the messenger answered and said: Israel fled before the Philistines, and a great defeat happened among the people, and both your sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died, and the ark of God was taken.
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, [Eli] fell from his seat on his back at the gate, broke his back and died; He was old and heavy. He was Judge of Israel for forty years.

19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant already before the birth. And when she heard the news of the taking of the ark of God and the death of her father-in-law and her husband, she fell to her knees and gave birth, for her pain came to her.
20 And when she died, the women standing at her said to her: Do not be afraid, you have a son. But she did not answer and did not pay attention.
21 And she called the baby: Ichabod, saying: "Glory departed from Israel" - with the taking of the ark of God and [with the death of] her father-in-law and her husband.
22 She said, "The glory from Israel has departed, for the ark of God is taken."
