Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of this powerful God? This is the God who smote the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness; |

Elijah was then ninety-eight years old; And his eyes faded, and he could not see. |

And the messenger answered and said: Israel fled before the Philistines, and a great defeat happened among the people, and both your sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died, and the ark of God was taken. |

When he mentioned the ark of God, [Eli] fell from his seat on his back at the gate, broke his back and died; He was old and heavy. He was Judge of Israel for forty years.

His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant already before the birth. And when she heard the news of the taking of the ark of God and the death of her father-in-law and her husband, she fell to her knees and gave birth, for her pain came to her. |

And when she died, the women standing at her said to her: Do not be afraid, you have a son. But she did not answer and did not pay attention. |

And she called the baby: Ichabod, saying: "Glory departed from Israel" - with the taking of the ark of God and [with the death of] her father-in-law and her husband. |

She said, "The glory from Israel has departed, for the ark of God is taken." |
