After Saul's death, when David returned from the defeat of the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag for two days, |
2
Behold, on the third day a man comes from the camp of Saul; His clothes were torn and the dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and bowed down to him. |
3
And David said to him, "Where did you come from?" And he said, I fled from the camp of Israel. |
4
And David said to him, "What happened?" tell me. And he said, The people fled from battle, and many of the people fell and died, and Saul and his son Jonathan died. |
5
And David said to the boy who told him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan died?" |
6th
And the young man said to him, "I happened to come to the hill of Gilboa, and, behold, Saul fell on his spear, and the chariots and horsemen overtook him." |
7th
Then he looked back and saw me, called me. |
8
And I said: Here I am. He said to me: Who are you? And I said to him: I am an Amalekite. |
9
Then he said to me: Come to me and kill me, for the longing of death has seized me, my soul is still in me. |
10
And I went up to him and killed him, for I knew that he would not live after his fall; And I took the crown that was on his head, and the wrist that was on his hand, and brought them to my lord here.

Then David seized his clothes and tore them, as were all the people who were with him. |
12
And wept and wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for his son Jonathan, for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, that they had fallen by the sword. |
13
And David said to the boy who told him, "Where are you from?" And he said: I am the son of a stranger from Amalek. |
14
Then David said to him, "How was it you were not afraid to raise up your hand to kill the Lord's anointed?" |
15
And David called one of the young men, and said unto him, Come, kill him. |
16
And he killed him, and he died. And David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth testified against you, when you said: I killed the anointed of the Lord."
17th
And David mourned Saul and his son Jonathan with a lamentable song, |
18
And commanded to teach the sons of Judah onions, as it is written in the book of the Righteous, and said: |
19
Your beauty, O Israel, is smitten on your heights! How the mighty fell! |
20
Do not tell in Gath, do not proclaim in the streets of Askalon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice that the daughters of the uncircumcised shall rejoice. |
21
Mountains of Gelwuy! Neither dew nor rain fall upon you, and let there be no fields with fruit, for there the shield of the mighty is defeated, Saul's shield, as though he was not anointed with oil. |
22
Without the blood of the wounded, without the fat of the strong, Jonathan's bow did not return, and Saul's sword did not return for nothing. |
23
Saul and Jonathan, kind and consonant in their lives, did not part in their death; Faster than eagles, stronger than lions [they were]. |
24
Daughters of Israel! Weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet with decorations and delivered your gold garments on your clothes. |
25
How did the mighty fall on the battlefield! Jonathan is wounded in your high places. |
26th
I am grieving for thee, my brother Jonathan; You were very dear to me; Your love was for me above the love of women. |
27th
How the powerful fell, the weapon abused! |
