Deuteronomy 18

Previous chapter Index Next chapter

To the priests the Levites, to all the tribe of Levi, there will be no part and lot with Israel: they must eat the sacrifices of the Lord and His portion;
The inheritance shall not be to him among his brethren: the Lord Himself is his inheritance, as He said to him.
This is what should be put to the priests from the people, from the sacrificed oxen or sheep: they must give the priest a shoulder, jaws and stomach;
Also the firstfruits of your bread, your wine and oil, and give the first-fruits of the fleece of your sheep to him,
For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, that he should stand before the LORD thy God, and minister in the name of the LORD, himself, and his sons, all the days.
th And if a Levite comes from one of your gates, out of all the land of the Israelites where he lived, and will come at will of his soul to the place that the Lord will choose,
th And will serve in the name of the Lord his God, like all his Levites who are there before the Lord,
Then let them use the same portion, in excess of the paternity received from the sale.

When you enter the land that the Lord your God gives you, then do not learn to do the abominations that the nations did:
There shall not be among you a man who conducts his son or his daughter through fire, the soothsayer, the diviner, the sorcerer, the sorcerer,
eleven A charmer, calling spirits, a wizard and inquiring of the dead;
Everyone who does this is an abomination to the Lord; and for these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.
Be blameless before the LORD your God;
For these nations, whom you cast out, listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, but the Lord your God has not given you this.

The LORD thy God shall raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like me;
Because you asked the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the congregation, saying: "I will not hear the voice of the Lord my God from henceforth and this great fire and I will not see it any more, so that I will not die."
th And the Lord said to me: it is good that they spoke.
I will raise up to them a prophet from among their brothers like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them all that I command him;
But whoever does not listen to my words, which [the prophet] will speak in my name, I will require it from that;
But a prophet who dares to speak in My name that which I have not commanded him to speak, and who will speak in the name of the gods of others, such a prophet shall be put to death.
And if thou say in thine heart, `How shall we know the word which the Lord did not speak? '
If a prophet says in the name of the Lord, but the word does not come to pass and will not be fulfilled, then the Lord did not speak this word, but the prophet spoke according to his audacity, - do not be afraid of him.
