Ezra 10

Previous chapter Index

When Ezra prayed and confessed, weeping and laying before the house of God, a very large gathering of Israelites, men and women and children flocked to him, because the people also wept much.
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam answered, and said unto Ezra, We have committed a crime against our God, that we have taken strange wives from the peoples of the earth; but there is still hope for Israel in this matter;
Let us now make a covenant with our God, that, on the advice of my lord and fearful of the commandments of our God, we will let [of ourselves] all the wives and [children] born of them - and be according to the law!
Arise, because this is your business, and we are with you: be strong and act!
And Ezra arose, and commanded the princes, the Levites, and all Israel to make a vow that they would do so. And they took an oath.

th And Ezra arose, and departed from the house of God to the dwelling of Johanan the son of Eliashib, and came there. He did not eat bread and did not drink water, because he cried about the crime of settlers.
th And they declared in Judea and in Jerusalem all [former] prisoners that they should gather in Jerusalem;
And whoever does not come in three days, the whole estate of that, according to the definition of the commanders and elders, will be put in an incursion, and he himself will be excommunicated from the community of immigrants.
And all the inhabitants of Judah and the land of Benjamin gathered themselves together in Jerusalem in three days. It was the ninth month, the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the square at the house of God, trembling in this matter, and from the rains.
Then Ezra the priest rose up and said to them: "You have committed a crime by taking wives of foreigners, and thereby increased the guilt of Israel."
eleven Repent therefore before the LORD God of your fathers, and do your will, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from foreign wives.
And the whole congregation answered, and said in a loud voice: as you said, we will do so.
However, the people are numerous and the time [now] is rainy, and there is no way to stand on the street. And this business is not one day or two, because we have committed a lot in this matter.
Let our superiors take the place of the whole society, and all of our cities who have taken foreign wives will come here at the appointed times and with them the elders of every city and its judges, until the burning wrath of our God turns from us for this matter.

Then Jonathan the son of Asahel, and Yahzehiah the son of Fikva, became over this matter, and Meshullam and Shavfai the Levite were their helpers.
And they did so out of captivity. And Ezra the priest, even the heads of the fathers, is separated from each generation, and all of them are named by name. And they did meet on the first day of the tenth month, to study this matter;
th And graduated [study] of all who took wives of foreigners, by the first day of the first month.
And they were found out of the sons of the priests, who took strange wives-of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Josedec, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jariv, and Gedaliah;
And they gave their hands [for assurance] that they would let their wives go, and that they were to sacrifice the ram for their guilt;

th And of the sons of Zaffu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza;
