After these incidents, in the reign of Artaxerxes, the king of Persia, Ezra, the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,
The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,
The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Maraiah,
Son of Zechariah, son of Uzziah, son of Bukkiah,
The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the high priest,
th This Ezra came out of Babylon. He was a scribe, well versed in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given. And the king gave him all according to his desire, for the hand of the Lord his God was over him.
th And certain of the children of Israel, and priests and Levites, and singers and gatekeepers, and the Nethinims, went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of the king Ahasuerus.
And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, in the seventh year of the king.
For on the first day of the first month was the beginning of the way out of Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the benevolent hand of his God was over him,
Because Ezra placed his heart to study the law of the Lord and to do it, and to teach in Israel the law and the truth.

eleven And here is the content of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe who taught the words of the commandments of the Lord and His laws in Israel:
Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the teacher of the perfect God's law of God, and so on.
From me it is commanded that in the kingdom of mine, every one of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, willing to go to Jerusalem, should go with you.
Since you are sent from the king and his seven counselors to survey the Jews and Jerusalem according to the law of your God, which is in your hand,
And to deliver the silver and gold that the king and his counselors have offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem,
And all the silver and gold that thou shalt gather in all the region of Babylon, together with the free giving of the people and the priests, which they shall give for the house of their God that is in Jerusalem;
th Therefore immediately buy for this money oxen, rams, lambs and grain offerings to them and offerings for them, and bring them to the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem.
And whatever you and your brothers want to do with the rest of the silver and gold, then according to the will of your God do.
And the vessels that are given you for the services of the house of your God, set before the God of Jerusalem.
And the rest of the things that are necessary for the house of your God, which you acknowledge to be necessary, come from the house of royal treasures.
And from me King Artaxerxes is commanded to all the treasurers who are behind the river: all that Ezra the priest, the teacher of the law of the God of heaven, will require from you, immediately give:
Silver to a hundred talents, and wheat to a hundred cows, and wine to a hundred baht, and up to a hundred baht butter, and salt without a designation [quantity].
All that is commanded by the God of heaven must be done with diligence for the house of the God of heaven; Lest he be angry with the kingdom, the king, and his sons.
And let us know that [against] any of the priests or Levites, singers, gatekeepers, Nethinims and servants at this house of God, impose no tax, no duty.
But thou, Ezra, according to the wisdom of thy God which is in thine hand, set rulers and judges, that they judge all the people that are across the river, who know all the laws of thy God, and whoever does not know these teach.
th Whoever does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king, let them immediately execute a court, to death, or to exile, or to a financial penalty, or to be imprisoned.

th Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, who has put in the heart of the king, to decorate the house of the Lord, which is in Jerusalem,
And inclined me to the mercy of the king and his counselors, and all the mighty princes of the king! And I took courage, for the hand of the Lord my God was over me, and I gathered the heads of Israel, that they should go with me.
