And Jacob went his way. And the angels of God met him. |
2
And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is the army of God. And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3
And Jacob sent messengers before his brother Esau to the land of Seir, to the region of Edom, |
4
And commanded them, saying: Thus say to my master Esau: this is what your servant Jacob says: I lived at Laban and lived until now; |
5
And I have oxen and donkeys and flocks, and slaves and maidservants; And I sent word to my master, that I might be pleased in your eyes. |

And the messengers returned to Jacob, and said, We have gone unto your brother Esau; He comes to meet you, and with him four hundred people. |
7th
Jacob was very frightened and embarrassed; And divided the people who were with him, and the small and large cattle and the camels into two camps. |
8
And he said: If Esau attacks one camp and beats him, the rest of the camp can be saved.
9
And Jacob said: The God of my father Abraham, and the God of my father Isaac, Lord, who told me: Return to your land, to your native land, and I will do good to you! |
10
I am not worthy of all the favors and all the blessings that You have made to Your servant, for I have crossed this Jordan with my staff, and now I have two camps. |

Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him that when he comes, he does not kill me [and] the mother and children. |
12
Thou hast said: I will do good to thee, and I will make thy seed like the sand of the sea, which thou shalt not number from the multitude.
13
And I slept there [Jacob] that night. And he took of what he had as a present to Esau his brother: |
14
Two hundred goats, twenty goats, two hundred sheep, twenty rams, |
15
Thirty camels of milk with their foals, forty cows, ten oxen, twenty asses, ten donkeys. |
16
And he gave each of his flocks in his hands to his flocks, and said to his servants, "Go before me, and leave the distance from the flock to the flock." |
17th
And he commanded the first, saying, When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, Whose are you? And where are you going? And whose is this [herd] before thee? |
18
Then say: Your servant is Jacob; It is a gift sent to my lord Esau; Here, he himself is behind us. |
19
The same ordered him to the second and third, and all who followed the herds, saying: "So tell Esau when you meet him; |
20
And say: Behold, your servant Jacob is with us. For he said [in himself]: I will pity him with the gifts that go before me, and then I will see his face; Maybe he will accept me. |
21
And the gifts went before him, and that night he spent the night in the camp. |
22
And he arose that night, and took two wives and two his maidservants, and eleven sons, he passed through Jabbok ford; |
23
And taking them, he translated through the stream, and translated all that he had.
24
And Jacob was left alone. And somebody fought with him until the dawn comes; |
25
And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the structure of his thigh and damaged the hip of Jacob's body when he fought with Him. |
26th
And he said, Let me go, for the dawn dawned. Jacob said: I will not let you go until you bless me. |
27th
And he said: What is thy name? He said: Jacob. |
28
And he said: henceforth the name of thee shall not be Jacob, but Israel, for thou hast wrestled with God, and thou shalt overcome men. |
29
And Jacob also asked, saying, "Say your name." And He said, "Why do you ask My name?" And he blessed him there. |
thirty
And Jacob called the name of the place: Penuel; For, he said, I saw God face to face, and my soul was preserved. |
31
And the sun rose when he passed Penuel; And he limped on his thigh. |
32
Therefore, even to this day, the sons of Israel do not eat the veins that are on the hip, because [the Fighter] touched the veins on Jacob's hip. |
