After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
2
Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches. |
3
In these lay a great multitude of sick, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the movement of water, |
4
For an angel went down from time to time in the pool and stirred up the water, and who was part of the first [it] on the water perturbation, he recovered, would be by what may have been obsessed with the disease. |
5
Here was a man who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. |
6
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he was lying for a long time, he said to him: Wilt thou be made whole? |
7
The sick man answered Him, Yes, Lord; I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled; when I am coming, another steps down before me. |
8
Jesus said to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. |
9
And immediately he recovered, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the Sabbath day. |
10
Therefore the Jews said cured, today is Saturday; not lawful for you to take the bed. |
eleven
He answered them: He that made me whole, the same said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. |
12
He was asked: Who is the man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? |
13
Was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. |
14
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, you are made whole; Sin no more, lest a worse thing with you. |
15
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus healed. |
16
And the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him for what he had done these [things] on Saturday.
17
Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. |
18
They sought the more to kill him Judah, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. |
19
Then Jesus answered and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, unless seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these things the Son also does. |
20
For the Father loves the Son and shows him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. |
21
For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he will. |
22
For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, |
23
that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. |
24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and cometh not into judgment, but has passed from death to life. |
25
Verily, verily, I say unto you: the time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. |
26
For as the Father has life in Himself, and has given to the Son to have life in himself. |
27
And he gave him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man. |
28
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves shall hear his voice; |
29
and shall come forth that have done good to the resurrection of life, and have done evil - the resurrection of damnation. |
thirty
I can do nothing of himself. As I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him who sent me.
31
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. |
32
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that is true the testimony which he testifies about me. |
33
You sent to John, and he testified to the truth. |
34
But I do not accept testimony from man, but I say this so that you may be saved. |
35
He was a burning and a shining light; and you were willing to rejoice in his light. |
36
I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me. |
37
And the Father who sent me has testified about me himself. And you go to his voice never heard nor seen his form; |
38
and ye have not his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent. |
39
Search the scriptures, for ye think ye have eternal life; and they which testify of me. |
40
But you do not want to come to me to have life. |
41
I do not accept glory from men, |
42
but I know you, you do not have the love of God. |
43
I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. |
44
How can you believe, when apart receive honor and glory that comes from the only God ye seek not? |
45
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there accuses you, Moses, in whom you trust. |
46
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. |
47
If you believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? |
