But the children of Israel made an offense, [and have] the accursed thing. Achan, the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing, and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and said to them, Go view the land. They went up and spied out Ai.
And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, do not let all the people go, but let about two thousand or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; all the people not to bother, because they are small [there].
So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai;
the men of Ai smote of them about thirty-six men, and pursued them from the gate to Sevara and smote them on the descent from the mountain; hearts of the people melted and became like water.

Joshua tore his clothes and fell on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD [lay] until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
And Jesus said, O Lord, Lord! why hast thou brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us? Oh, if we had stayed and lived beyond the Jordan!
Oh my God! what shall I say after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies?
For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth. And what do [then] your great name?

The Lord said to Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
eleven Israel has sinned, and they have transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; and we took of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and put it even among their own stuff;
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, and turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed; I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
Up, sanctify the people and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: `accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; therefore, you can not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing ';
come tomorrow [all] your tribes; the tribe which the LORD shall take shall come near by families; the family which the Lord shall come near by families; household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man;
and conviction of [the abduction] accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and wrought folly in Israel.

Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah;
And he brought the tribe of Judah, and indicated the tribe of Zara; he brought near the tribe Zarina for families, and given [the family] Zavdievo;
he brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.
Then Jesus said to Achan, My son! Give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.
And Achan answered Joshua and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and did this and that:
I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels; I coveted them and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and, behold, [all] it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
And they took them from the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zarina, and silver, and clothing, and a bar of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen and asses it, and sheep, his tent and all that he [ it was], and they brought them to the valley of Achor.
And Jesus said, for what hast thou troubled us? The LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.
And they raised over him a great heap of stones, [that remaineth] unto this day. After this he turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Achor to this day.
