Ukraine (Ukrainian ukrɑjinɑ) is a state in Eastern Europe. According to the results of the 2001 census, the population was 48,240,902 permanent residents and 48,457,102 people of the population, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine as of April 1, 2017, 42,353,130 permanent residents and 42,522,767 people in the current population, the territory within the constitutional framework of the country - 603 549, while part of it by the Ukrainian authorities is not de facto controlled. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev . The official language is Ukrainian; Also at different levels the status of regional languages, languages of national minorities and some others is officially fixed.
Ukraine is a unitary state and a parliamentary-presidential republic. Since June 7, 2014, Peter Poroshenko has been president. Prime Minister of Ukraine - Vladimir Groysman (since April 14, 2016). The country is divided into 27 administrative-territorial units, 24 of which are regions, 1 - an autonomous republic and 2 are cities of state subordination (Kiev, Sevastopol).
It borders with Belarus in the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary - in the west, Romania and Moldova - in the south-west, Russia in the east and northeast. In the south and southeast it is washed by the Black and Azov seas, has sea borders with Romania in the Black Sea and with Russia in the Azov Sea.
Most of the faithful profess Orthodoxy.
The volume of GDP for 2016, calculated at purchasing power parity was 353 billion US dollars (8,272 US dollars per capita). Nominal GDP in the same year amounted to 176.31 billion US dollars (3 867 US dollars per capita). The monetary unit is the hryvnia (UAH), the average exchange rate for 2015 is 22 hryvnia per 1 US dollar, the current one at the end of 2017 is 25 hryvnia per 1 US dollar.
Independence of the country from the USSR, the Union Republic of which Ukraine was from December 1922, proclaimed on August 24, 1991. The continuer of state-national traditions and the successor of the UPR, the successor state of the Ukrainian SSR, the successor to the USSR under the international treaties, the co-founder of the UN, CIS, GUAM, BSEC and other international organizations, is in association with the European Union.
