The function of the air filter is to clean the air before it enters the engine. Why, then, almost all racing engines, especially professional racing cars, do not have air filters. It's all about air resistance at the inlet. The fact is that the more air resistance, the more engine power is lost. Maintaining an optimal, unlimited flow becomes a problem when air must pass through the filter element. Conventional paper elements have great resistance to airflow, because the filter material is very dense. The greater the resistance, the greater the loss of power.

Engineers of K & N have achieved great results in the design of sports air filters. In the late 60's, K & N began to impregnate the cotton gauze of the air filter with a special oil, which exceeded the minimum filtration standards with a slight restriction of the air flow. As a result, the first filter element was made from several layers of surgical gauze located between two sheets of wire mesh. The material was pressed to reduce the size of the filter and increase its surface area. Finally, cotton gauze was impregnated with a special oil to increase the filtering ability. The original concept of making filters is still there today. The filter element with cotton gauze is the basis of the K & N filter, K & N filters occupy a leading position in the production of reusable sports filters. The K & N filter transmits at least 50% more air than regular filters without reducing the filter capacity.

Why is K & N SPECIAL?

With an external inspection of the filter, large openings in the filter material are visible - this is the main reason for the high airflow capacity. The filter is made of layers of surgical cotton gauze with oil impregnation, sandwiched between an aluminum mesh.

The special oil composition found in cotton gauze does not limit the throughput and at the same time provides a high-quality filtration of the air flow. This is the basis of a unique filtration system! Dust particles in the air stream, attracted to the filter, have a negative charge and pass through the filter element (similar to the action of a magnet) and are attached to the impregnated cotton gauze having a positive charge.

With a large accumulation of delayed particles on the outside of the filter, openings in the gauze tissue remain open. This external level of dust and sand becomes a secondary element in the filtration of incoming particles and at the same time high throughput is ensured. This simple but very effective secondary filter is the basis for a long filter service, in many cases up to 10 times longer than a conventional filter. 100,000 miles filter does not require maintenance and this is the 'norm'. Cleaning is carried out by mileage or if, the accumulated layer of contamination is 2mm - 3mm.

MYTHS ABOUT K & N AIR FILTERS

The efficiency of filtering the standard air filters depends on the porosity of the material from which they are made. The smaller the porosity, the better the filtering capacity of the element. Lubricated cotton filters used in K & N function completely differently than the regular air system. In the production of K & N filters, there are proven scientific principles that determine how an air filter removes dirt particles from the air flow. The first of these principles is known as "interception", which is applied to particles of mud traveling with air current. The air flow will always find the shortest path and as the air passes through the filter fibers, some of the particles will come into contact with the fibers and will be "captured". These particles will be retained in the fibers of the filter element by using a special impregnation.

Another principle is known as impaction, which mainly affects large or heavier dirt particles. Impaction is when inertia or momentum causes the particle to deviate from the total airflow. In other words, heavy particles do not follow the air current past the filter fibers, but instead they fall directly into the fibers.

The most important principle for developing a K & N filter is the laws of physics that control the movement of very small particles of dirt. Small particles are affected by forces in the air current. For example, the forces of speed changes, pressure changes, the storm caused by other particles and interaction with air molecules cause very small particles to move randomly and chaotically, contrary to the basic airflow,. As a result, these particles do not follow the air current, and their erratic motion causes them to collide with the filter fibers.

A conventional paper filter is capable of filtering the airflow directly by one surface. Unlike conventional filters, the K & N element has a greater advantage due to the multi-layer impregnated surface and better element configuration. This feature allows the K & N air filter to retain more dust.

What do air filters do? Filters clean the air before it enters the engine. The more cold air you can drive into the engine, the more power it will give, provided that the air-fuel mixture is optimal. From this it follows that if you replace a standard air filter with one that can pass more air through yourself, you will increase the power of the motor, and there is no miracle in it!
