SIMPLE AND COMPACT APPARATUS FOR BATCHING BY SOLID SOLDers.

WATER-burner
Simple and compact device for soldering with soldered solder

Author: Yu. Orlov

Using the principle of obtaining hydrogen by electrolysis of an aqueous solution of alkali, described in the magazine Modalist-Designer No. 7 for 1980 , I decided to make a simpler and more compact apparatus, convenient for working with small parts, when soldering with solder. Thanks to the small external dimensions of the cell, he can find a place on a small desktop, and using a standard battery rectifier as a power supply unit makes it easy to manufacture the device and makes it safe to work with. Relatively small, but quite sufficient performance of the device allowed to simplify the design of the water seal and to guarantee fire and explosion safety. For those who are unfamiliar with the previous publication, I recall the device of the cell. Between the two boards, connected by four pins, there is a battery of steel plates-electrodes separated by rubber rings. The internal cavity of the battery is half filled with an aqueous solution of KOH or NaOH . The constant voltage applied to the plates causes electrolysis of water and release of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. This mixture is diverted through a polyvinylchloride tube, put on the union, into the intermediate container, and from it into the water seal. The gas that passed through the mixture of water and acetone placed there in a 1: 1 ratio has the necessary composition for combustion and, withdrawn by another tube into the nozzle - the needle from the medical syringe, burns at its outlet with a temperature of about 1800 ° C. For the electrolyzer plates I used a thick Orgteklo. This material is easily processed, chemically resistant to the action of the electrolyte and allows you to visually control its level, so that if necessary, add distilled water through the filling hole. Plates can be made of sheet metal (stainless steel, nickel, pickled or transformer iron) with a thickness of 0.6-0.8 mm . For the convenience of assembly, circular grooves are pressed in the plates for the rubber sealing rings, their depth with a ring thickness of 5-6 mm should be 2-3 mm . Rings, designed to seal the inner cavity and electrical insulation of the plates, are cut from a sheet oil-resistant or acid-resistant rubber. To make it manually is not difficult, and yet the ideal tool for this is the "round-the-top", described in "MK" No. 4 for 1985 . Four steel studs M8 , connecting the parts, are insulated with a 10 mm diameter cambridge and are passed through the corresponding holes 11 mm in diameter . The number of plates in the battery is 9 . It is determined by the parameters of the power supply unit: its power and maximum voltage - at the rate of 2V per plate. The current consumed depends on the number of plates involved (the lower the number, the greater the current) and the concentration of the alkali solution. In a more concentrated solution, the current is lower, but it is better to use a 4-8% solution - in electrolysis it does not so foam.

The contact terminals are soldered to the first and last three plates. A standard battery charger for car batteries VL-2 , connected to 8 plates, at a voltage of 17 V and current of about 5 A, provides the required performance of the fuel mixture for the injector - a needle with an internal diameter of 0.6 mm . The optimum ratio of the nozzle's nozzle diameter and pot performance is established by experiment - so that the ignition zone of the mixture is located outside the needle. If the capacity is low or the hole diameter is too large, the combustion will begin in the needle itself, which will quickly warm up and melt away from this.

A reliable barrier from the spread of the flame along the supply tube inside the cell is the simplest water shutter, which is made from two empty cans for refilling gas lighters. Their advantages are the same as for the board material: ease of mechanical processing, chemical resistance and translucency, which allows controlling the liquid level in the water seal. The intermediate capacitance eliminates the possibility of mixing the electrolyte and the composition of the water seal in the modes of intensive operation or under the influence of the discharge arising when the power is turned off. And in order to avoid this, at the end of the work, immediately disconnect the tube from the cell. The fittings of the containers are made of copper tubes with a diameter of 4 and 6 mm , they are installed in the top wall of balloons on the thread. Through them, the casting of the water seal and the draining of the condensate from the separation vessel are carried out. An excellent funnel for this is obtained from another empty can, cut in half and with a thin tube installed in place of the valve. Connect a short polyvinylchloride tube with a diameter of 5 mm electrolyzer with an intermediate capacity, the latter with a water seal, and its outlet fitting with a longer tube - with a nozzle-needle. Turn on the rectifier, adjust the voltage or number of connected plates to the rated current and set the gas leaving the nozzle. If you need more performance - increase the number of plates and apply a more powerful power supply - with LATR and the simplest rectifier. The temperature of the flame and is subject to some adjustment by the composition of the water seal. When there is only water in it, the mixture contains a lot of oxygen, which in some cases is undesirable. The bay in the water gate is methyl alcohol, the mixture can be enriched and raise the temperature to 2600 ° C. To reduce the temperature of the flame, the water seal is filled with a mixture of acetone and water in a ratio of 1: 1 . However, in the latter cases, you should also remember to replenish the contents of the water seal.
