The figure below shows the power supply circuit of the fluorescent lamp to a normal battery. This is very convenient when there is no possibility to use the power grid.

Principle of operation

This circuit is a voltage converter of the blocking generator type. The excitation in it is due to the feedback between the collector and the base circuits of the transistor by means of the corresponding windings of the transformer. Resistor R1 sets the operating mode of the transistor.

After the switch SA1 is turned on, a high voltage appears in the upper winding of the transformer, which is supplied to the fluorescent lamp. Under the influence of shock ionization of the gas, the lamp begins to glow. And the light will be even a lamp with a burnt out filament (or filaments) of incandescence, but not more than 20 W, and not too worn out.

Device

Transformer - line TVS-110LA from a black and white TV. It will have to be worked on: dismantle, remove the high-voltage winding and the panel of the kenotron, and so that the transformer does not "squeak", glue the ends of the magnetic circuit with glue before assembly. Transistor is almost any powerful silicon structure of np-n or pn-p. In the latter version, the polarity of the battery and the capacitor must be changed. The transistor must be fixed on the heat sink with a surface area of 30 ... 50 cm 2 or pressed against the aluminum strip of the transformer with a clamp.

The battery can be made up of four to six galvanic cells 373 for the option of a hiking trip. In the case of car travel or in summer conditions, you need to use an automobile or motorcycle battery. Then you can do without a capacitor.

The converter starts working almost immediately after switching on. The desired brightness of the luminescence of the lamp is determined by selecting a resistor. However, to excessively reduce its resistance to obtain greater brightness does not make sense, since the current consumed from the power source increases. Especially it concerns the power supply variant of the converter from the battery of galvanic cells.
