GAS EMBOLY

ETIOLOGY
Gas embolism (the accumulation of oxygen bubbles under the skin of fish and the blockage of blood vessels by them) is caused primarily:

  • Excessive supply of oxygen to the aquarium;
  • Actively going photosynthesis of a large number of plants in a brightly lit aquarium;
  • Adding a lot of fresh water from the water pipe;
  • When fish are released after transporting to aqua-poor aquarium water.

SYMPTOMS
Fish begin to swim on their sides, behave uneasily, timidly. Fins and the whole body tremble convulsively. The movements of the gill covers slow down, then cease. There may be clouding of the cornea and lens of the eye, scaling of the scales (fish scales rise under the pressure of liquid accumulated in scales pockets). The connective tissue of the fins can collapse.

PREVENTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It should be borne in mind that different types of fish need a different amount of oxygen. Mollies, guppies, catfish, cichlids have a small amount of oxygen. Barbuses of all kinds, with a lack of oxygen, perish. The operation for transplanting fish should be done carefully, by adding a small stream of water from the aquarium, where the fish should be transplanted, into the vessel in which it is located.
