INVASION DISEASES

DIPLOSTOMATOSIS (EYE CATAP)

THE REBATTER
Pathogens - worm larvae Diplostoma. Body up to 5 mm long consists of two segments, narrowed in the middle. The anterior part is flat, leaf-shaped, the posterior part is elongated.

BIOLOGY
Adult worms are parasites of birds feeding on fish. Development occurs with the participation of two intermediate hosts - freshwater mollusks (the first) and fish of the carp family (the second).

SYMPTOMS AND PATHOGENESIS
The larva enters the eye of the fish, settles in the ocular membrane or the lens itself. The lens becomes cloudy, becomes milky white (lime is deposited in the eye), a thorn is formed and blindness comes. Sometimes there is eyelid and eye enlargement.

PREVENTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In the aquarium, non-quarantined shellfish should not enter the aquarium, especially the pond snake, which is basically the carrier (the first intermediate host) of the parasite.
