HOME AQUARIUM

Here will be posted articles from various sources related to aquarium and all that is associated with it.

YOU ARE TIME FOR HOLIDAYS It turns out that the little-bred lovers of wildlife are at a dead end even on the threshold of the inevitable summer "weekends" held at the dacha. And the main danger seems to them in the form of a violation of the feeding regime.
CHILDREN OF MORNING RAINBOW - 2 (CONTINUED) Red glossolepis - Glossolepis incisus Weber, 1908 first entered our aquariums in the late seventies. Hungarian colleagues from the Budapest cichlid club brought them to me in the autumn of 1978.
GROUND SOURCES - MELANIA These mollusks are present almost in every freshwater aquarium, they are used to them, they are almost ignored. As a rule, no one specifically targets them and, moreover, does not breed them.
"LIGHTS" - FALSE AND PRESENT Fish this can not be called a novelty. But the craze for the suddenly available exotic imports from Europe, Asia and South America led to the fact that many venerable Russian fish farmers abandoned their farms and some of the traditional species of aquarium fish (including haracin) disappeared from the Russian zoo market.
SEVERE NORTH FROM SOUTH AMERICA Severe cichlases - large, high-bodied cichlids - were very popular with us about 15-20 years ago. Then they were also called false discus. True discus - gentle and capricious fish - it was not easy to keep, and unpretentious "ersatz-discus" perfectly felt even in the aquariums of beginners.
AFRICAN SURPRISES The tetra-congo - Phenacogrammus (Micralestes) interruptus (Boulenger, 1899), also known under the names "beautiful Congo", "iridescent phenacogrammus", etc., received the greatest recognition. Such epithets reliably reflect the bright coloration of fish.
ORDINARY PONDOVIK For the first time I got acquainted with this mollusk as a representative of the aquarium fauna about ten years ago on the market in Simferopol, where I was recommended by one of the sellers who for a while kept these animals in their tanks.
EXCELLENT CHOICE One of the ornamental fishes that fully meet these requirements are the Lalii - Colisa lalia (Hamilton-Buchanan, 1822) from the labyrinth family. At home - in the north of India - these fish inhabit small, densely overgrown grassy reservoirs.
THYERIA- CLUSH A small family of Thayeria of the family of the Characidae, or American tetras, today has only four species of fish: the straightforward tayloria of Ifet (Thayeria ifati Gery, 1959), the tetra penguin (T. Obliga Eigenmann, 1908) , The taunia of Santa Maria (T.sanctamariae Ladiges, 1951) and oblique thieria (T.boehlkei Weitzman, 1957). The latter kind of speech will be discussed.
BLACK "STAR" So it was said that most large cichlids are not popular and desirable inhabitants of aquariums. Their inherent heaviness, gluttony, aggressiveness serve as serious obstacles to making such fish become universal favorites.
CHILDREN OF THE MORNING RAINBOW The first rainbow fish, which used to be referred to the family Aterinidae (Atherinidae), appeared in our country in the mid-fifties.
ROYAL TETRA As you know, in aquariums live two royal tetra: the usual "palmery", which occurs quite often, and an extremely rare "red-eyed". Between them, like a mirage, there is also a third kind of Nematobrycon amphiloxus - a black royal tetra ...
CYCLIDES AND PLANTS The amazing beauty of the Malawian and Tanganik cichlids often provokes amateurs to create aquarium arrangements that are completely unlike the natural biotopes.
AQUARIUM "CONGO". Soma Somon is an invariable attribute of the colonization of almost any aquarium. They are planted here, at least already, in order to revive the bottom area. Some enthusiasts in general want to see in their aquarium only soms and try to equip the capacity so that in it the maximum number of species has found shelter. In this way, mistakes often lie in wait for them.
ABOUT THE "POOR" GURS WALK THE WORD This was the first time that Europe met spotted gurus Trichogaster trichopterus (Pallas, 1977) in 1896 gol. Fish were widely spread and almost immediately were successfully divorced. In Russia, the first lots of fish, also subsequently successfully reproduced, were received in 1912 - 1915.
It's not so simple Holopristes riddlei, Aphyocharax maxillaris, Pristella riddlei and finally, Pristella maxillaris - all these names in different publications are called the same old friend of ours.
BAND WATER Aquarhythmists-cichlids of our country for a long time contain and successfully bred representatives of the genus telomochromis (Telmatochromis) - mostly "dogs" T.burgeoni, T. temporalis.
FOUR-SCUBA RARITETES Almost two and a half centuries ago the first classical description of tetraiodines appeared, which laid the foundation for the taxonomy of the genus itself, as well as the family of pufferfish - Tetraodontidae.
And a non-dealer is not necessary ... Beginners are often surprised aquarists: it seems that everything is done correctly, and the fish do not reproduce ... The naive concern of newcomers is quite understandable, because the reproduction of fish is a weighty evidence of well-being in the aquarium and literacy of its owner's actions.
ALTUM - MEANING "HIGH" This is the Latin name for the fish, which are the closest relatives of the known to any aquarist Pterophyllum scalare, translated from Latin.
TETRA KOSTELO Green neon is a typical representative of the hemigrammus genus. Stretched, length up to 3.5 - 4.0 cm, slightly flattened laterally body, rounded snout, terminal mouth. The color is mostly silvery and, like many fish of this genus, has a weak greenish reflection. Iris of the eye is not colored.
CHOCOLATE FROM AFRICA Of the numerous genus Aphyosemion in Russian aquariums, three species are most common: A.gardneri (Boulenger, 1911), A.striatum (Boulenger, 1911) and A.australe (Rachow, 1921). This is explained simply - you can hardly find other exotic fish, the content and breeding of which would be less troublesome. Yes, plus a small size, a bright color and a peaceful disposition.
LEGENDARY POLOSATIK This is a five-strip lamprolog (Neolamprologus tretocephalus) inhabiting stony biotopes of Tanganyika. Externally, the fish are very similar to Cyphotylapia frontosa, only smaller and without a prominent convex forehead.
KRASAVETS AND ZADIR The first mention of the males (Betta splendens Regan, 1909) belongs to Theodor Kantor and dates back to 1849. Fishes did not differ great beauty, but quickly settled in the aquariums of amateurs, were multiplied in large numbers and would soon surely have become banality, or even completely gone, but ...
MARISE IS REMAINING FOR MYSELF The Marisa (Marisa sp.) Lives in South America, in the Orinoco river basin. This mollusk was imported into Europe in the first decade of this century and was cultivated until the thirties. Then the culture of the mariza disappeared, and in 1995 the interest in this representative of the family Ampullariidae arose again.
COMPLEX LORIKARIDIDES In the past 10 to 15 years, European aquarium lovers have received a great popularity from the Loricariidae (the Loricariidae family), unfortunately, only a few species of this interesting family are found in our aquarists.
UNHEATHROOM FROM BRAZIL At home, I determined her look according to the benefits I had. It was a representative of the suborder Gymnotoidei - Sternopygus macrurus (Bloch - Schneider, 1801). True, information about habits and habits in nature was scanty.
GOLDEN PARROT For the peculiar outlines of the head and the bright color of golden Juloidochromis (Julidochromis ornatus) is called by the lovers of African cichlids a golden parrot. Similarity with the bird gives it slightly bent to the bottom, resembling a beak snout, and according to the colors it is perhaps one of the most beautiful yulidochromis living in aquariums.
LIVING RAINBOW Having gathered in one aquarium all five "true" neon families of the genus Paracheirodon known today, I realized that I did not have to see a more attractive sight. Admiring them, I for a long time could not move away from the aquarium and do other things.
STARTING PARATHYLIDGE Madagascar cichlids, like the entire wildlife of this amazing African island, are under the strictest export-import control of the state. However, despite the customs barriers, since the beginning of the 1990s, a new, very attractive "Madagascar" appeared - in the aquariums of amateurs of the United States, and later of Western Europe - the paratilapia polleni Bleeker (1868).
APISTOGRAM - PANDA The apistogramma panda (Apistogramma nijsseni), caught in the lower reaches of the Ucayali River (Peru), was described by S. Cullander in 1979. Two years later, the first batch of these apistograms was brought to Europe by Swiss aquarist Patrick de Ram. Four years later I managed to buy a dozen fry in Berlin from the recognized authority in the field of cichlids Yu Kruger.
PSEVDOMORSKAYA AQUARIUM What style of design of an aquarium to choose for a room with unusual lines of furniture, prevalence of contrasting blue, gray and white tones? The answer suggests itself: "the sea".
MASK HALINOCHROM - GRACIOUS ELEGANCE Among the many colorful cichlids brought to us from the African lake of Tanganyika and successfully adapted to aquarium conditions, some of the rarest are representatives of the genus chalinochromis (Chalinochromis).
BOW-AMANDA To date, Hyphessobrycon amandae Gery-Uj, 1987 can be considered one of the smallest creatures among aquatic vertebrates. Although, according to some sources, the size of adult females reaches 3 cm, in practice they rarely exceed 1.5-2.0 cm, and males even less.
From the Coconut Shell Now in the grocery stores coconuts are often on sale. They are relatively inexpensive, their flesh and milk have a pleasant taste, but it is not easy to get to them: the shell of the nut is solid and strong, ordinary kitchen utensils can not cope with it. At the same time for the aquarist this factor is of value, almost more than the internal contents of the nut.
FUNNY, BUT POPULAR Central American cichlasomas of the Cichlidae family have been attracting the attention of aquarists since the end of the last century. Large sizes, slender proportions, interesting behavior, extraordinary color - all this along with unpretentiousness and high intelligence allows the fish to maintain a stable popularity rating.
