Bronzite is similar in physical properties to augite. Crystals of rhombic syngony are rare, they often form granular aggregates. It forms short-prismatic crystals, sometimes irregular grains and massive aggregates. Color light greenish-brown. Bronzeite (like other orthorhombic pyroxenes, but somewhat more active) can easily be converted into a fibrous serpentine of green color. Such a product of changes, described under the name Bastitis, was observed in many serpentinite rocks of the Apennines.
Chemical composition. Bronzite is an iron-rich difference in enstatite, which contains up to 14% iron oxide (25% FeSiO3). Form of crystalline precipitates. Dense, coarse aggregates. Crystal structure. Simple chains of ions (see pyroxenes). Class of symmetry. Rhombo-bipyramidal. Cleavage. Average prism (100), hatching on cleavage planes. Aggregates. Dense, draining.
Diagnostic signs.
Asterism may manifest itself. It does not dissolve in acids. The flame of a candle melts easily.
Origin.
Bronzeite is a widespread mineral of igneous rocks of basic composition - gabbro and peridotite. Occurs also in some crystalline schists and effusives.
Place of Birth.
Bronzite from the gabbroic rocks of the Bushveld deposits in the Transvaal (South Africa) and Kraubate (Styria, Austria) is well known.
