Boulanger - Lead and antimony sulfide. Shine metal, opaque. Colour: lead-gray to iron-black. The dash is black, brown, gray. Fracture splintery. Fragile. Cleavage is perfect. It occurs in hydrothermal deposits. The crystals (monoclinic system) is very rare, usually forms a felt or radiant units, there are solid masses. In the presence of large clusters can serve as lead ore. Distribution Locations: Germany, Sweden, Yugoslavia, CIS.
Boulanger is one of the most common sulfosalts. It occurs as fine and dense fibrous aggregates lead-gray color, and in the form of felt-like clusters of acicular crystals, and flake. Most often found together with sphalerite, stibnite, siderite and others. Minerals.
Chemical composition. Lead (Pb) 55.4%, antimony (Sb) 25,7%, sulfur (S) 18,9%. Fracture. A characteristic bend is not. Form crystalline precipitates. Fine-grained tangled fibrous, hair-like aggregates. Class symmetry. Prismatic - 2 / m. Aggregates. Close-grained.
Diagnostic features.
The felt-like masses, it is easily confused with other sulphosalts containing antimony, primarily jamesonite and tsinkeitom. Easily it melts on charcoal gives the lead wren and white coating of antimony trioxide (Sb2O3). Behavior in acids. It dissolves in hot HNO3 and HCl.
Origin.
It is found in ore veins with lead sulphosalts, galena and pyrite. It may also be associated with quartz and dolomite.
Deposits and application.
It reported excellent samples of mine Bottineau in Tuscany, as well as Molière (France), Pribram (Czech Republic), from numerous locations in North and South America and Japan. How rare, it comes in the form of "hairs" in geodes Carrara marble. Boulanger is produced on an industrial scale as a lead ore.
