Halides: Diaboleitis
Diagnostic card.
Pb 2 Cu Cl 2 (OH) 4
Tsingonia tetragonal
Hardness 2,5
Specific weight 5,5
Cleavage is perfect
Cracked shell
Color blue
In contrast to sickness, the crystals of diabolite are not cubic, but tabular. The color is intensely blue, more reminiscent of the color of the linarite or copper sulphate than the color of pain.
Diagnostic signs.
Diaboleitis easily differs from sickness in the form of crystals. The simultaneous presence of chlorine and lead serves as a difference from all other common secondary copper minerals. Diaboleitis should be distinguished from other gems and ornamental minerals of intense blue color by a small hardness.
Origin.
Occurs in the oxidation zone of copper deposits.
Place of Birth.
It was first discovered in England, Mendip Hills (Somerset), where it is found in the iron and manganese deposit, where it sporadically occurs together with hydrocercussite, cerussite and mendipite. Good samples of diaboite are sometimes delivered from Mammoth Mine near Tiger in Arizona (USA). Here, his magnificent crystals are associated with pain, cerussite and hydrocercussite.
