Zeolites: Harmony
Diagnostic card.
Ba Al 2 Si 6 O 16 * 6 H 2 O
Singonia monoclinic
Hardness 4,5
Specific gravity 2.4-2.5
Cleavage is good
Broken fracture
Color is colorless, differently colored
Color in powder white
Glitter glass
It is represented by grayish-white, yellow and light-gray crystals, twinned so that the splices imitate rhombic symmetry, resembling a phillipsite. Has good cleavage in the pinacoid. Colorless, white, cloudy white, with light color shades.
Chemical composition. Potassium oxide (K2O) 0.5-2.5%, barium oxide (BaO) 19-21%, alumina (Al2O3) 15-19%, water (H2O) 13-15%. The shape of the crystals. Column and pyramidal crystals and twins, for which cross-section is characteristic. Class of symmetry. Monoclinic-sphenoidal - 2. Cleavage. Good by (010). Aggregates. Often druses.
Diagnostic signs.
Harmony melts in the candle flame, coloring it in yellow, indicating the presence of barium. In hydrochloric acid dissolves, leaving a jelly-like silica. Melts with difficulty, whitens and crumbles. Behavior in acids. It decomposes in HCl.
Origin.
Occurs in the cavities of igneous, mainly basalt, rocks, in some ore veins and in a number of metamorphic rocks.
Place of Birth.
Beautiful crystals are found in the ore veins of the Andreasberg deposit (Germany), in Stronshian (Scotland) and Kongsberg (Norway), in the bauxites of the Urals and in the gneisses of Nysickcatch Lake (Canada). In Italy, occasionally occurs in the Sarrabus mine (Sardinia) and the Cerisieri graphite mine in Val-Germanaska (Piedmont region).
