Silicates: ilvaite
Diagnostic Card.
In the photo - ilvaita samples. This mineral was named after the Latin name of the island of Elba, where it was found for the first time.
Ca Al 2 (OH) 2 Si 2 O 7 * H 2 O glass
Crystal system orthorhombic
Hardness of 5.5-6
Specific gravity 4.1
Cleavage is easily seen
fracture conchoidal
Color almost black
Color black powder
Gloss of the resin to the glass
Presented elongated prismatic crystals with shading on the faces of the prism. More common units needle-like crystals with a fibrous-radial, sometimes puchkovatoy structure. It has good cleavage and a very dark, almost black color, with shine of the resin to the glass on the fresh fracture; an old fracture seems almost opaque. The mineral is heavy and hard (difficult to scratch knife blade).
Chemical composition. fluctuating; calcium oxide (CaO) 13.7% Iron oxide (FeO) 35,2%, iron oxide (Fe2O3) 19.6%, silicon dioxide (SiO2) 29,3%, water (H2O) 2.2% oxide manganese (MnO) to 9%. Form crystals. Prisms; on the faces of the crystal vertical hatching. Class symmetry. Rombo - bipyramidal - mmm. Cleavage. Good for (010), (001) and (100). Aggregates. Radiant, columnar, granular, dense.
Diagnostic features.
Legkoplavok; It gives gelatinous residue treated with hydrochloric acid. Behavior in acids. It dissolves readily in HCl. Black, brownish color.
Origin.
Typical mineral of metamorphic origin.
Deposits and application.
It occurs in the form of beautiful crystals and radiating aggregates (in association with hedenbergite, magnetite, garnet and pyrite) in Campiglia Marittima (Livorno Province) and Capo Calamita (Elba Island). In addition, there is in Sardinia. Other places known remarkable instances of this mineral: United States (Idaho), Greece (Serifos), Greenland and Russia (the Urals). Ilvaite not produced on an industrial scale, it is extremely scientific and collector interest.
