Diagnostic card.
Na 2 B 4 O 6 (OH) 2 * 3 (H 2 O)
Singonia monoclinic
Hardness 2,5-3
Specific gravity 1.9-1.93
Cleavage is perfect
Broken thorn
Color is colorless, differently colored
Color in powder white
Glitter from glass to silky
Crystals in the form of isothed isometric crystals. Their shape is irregular and due to the repetition of the surfaces of the faces - rounded. The size of the crystals can reach 1 meter. The structure of the crystals seems fibrous, but in fact this is due to the presence of cleavage in two directions, over which the mineral is easily separated. Glitter is glass with a tendency to silky. The color is either absent or white; Opaque in connection with the transition to tinkalconite.
Origin.
Kernite was accidentally discovered in California (USA), where it forms a fairly large deposit, which, apparently, is associated with metamorphic transformations under the action of igneous rocks, as a result of which the original borax turned partly into kernite.
Deposits and applications.
The most significant deposit is Boron in the county of Kern (California); Also found in Spain, Turkey and Larderello (Tuscany region in Italy). Kernite is currently the main source of commercial borax production.
