Its crystals are rather isometric than elongated along any one direction, and have a short-prismatic appearance. Sometimes they look like rhombohedra and octahedra with many faces, but somewhat distorted.
Colemanite can be confused with calcite or datolite, which are also white or colorless, transparent or translucent, and form druses or ghosts, ejected by a variety of individual crystals. Colemanite can also occur in the form of dense masses or in the form of granular aggregates. Color grayish-white or gray.
Diagnostic signs.
It melts easily, coloring the flame green due to the presence of boron.
Origin.
It occurs in the hardened sediments of ancient lakes, such as in the Death Valley and Boron deposits in the state of California. Used for collecting.
Deposits and applications.
Fine crystals come from the fields of Boron (USA) and Bigadich (Turkey) and the boroniferous region of Inder (Kazakhstan). Colemanite is one of the most important industrially developed boron ores.
